President Barack Obama signed a bill into law on Thursday guaranteeing himself Secret Service protection for the rest of his life.
White House press secretary Jay Carney said Obama signed the Former Presidents Protection Act of 2012 on Thursday. The law affects Obama, former President George W. Bush and future presidents, who under current law would only be protected for 10 years after leaving office.
According to the press secretarys office, the law restores lifetime Secret Service protection of former Presidents who did not serve as President prior to January 1, 1997, and their spouses; and provides for protection of all children of former Presidents until they become 16 years of age.
Republican South Carolina Rep. Trey Gowdy introduced the bill in the House.

Lifetime SS protection for former prezzes but only inside U.S. borders. Abroad, they’re on their own dime. IIRC.

The Second Amendment is ordinary American Citizens “lifetime protection.”
But of course The Won, President Hussein, wants to decree an infringement on that unalienable right.
It’s just common sense...

Nope. The law, which also gives lifetime protection to George W. Bush and all future presidents, was passed by the House on Dec. 5 and the Senate on Dec. 28.

Clinton was the last one to get the lifetime coverage. Starting with GWB it was supposed to be limited to 10 years.
To: Nachum
I think we just got the answer to the make the area around the president a gun-free zone petition...

Actually I thought ex-POTUSES always got SS protection.
It was "news-worthy" that Gerald Ford, Richard Nixon and Jimmah refused theirs.
IIRC, they had/have private armed guards, though.
Unsure about GWB. Doesn't he go out in public all the time?

This bill actually puts the
Secret Service protection back to where it was before 1997. In that year, Congress had set it for a period of 10 years after the President leaves office. With the recent series of relatively young Presidents, it is possible that they would have outlived their protection.

The Clinton's have lifetime protection. Clinton signed a law during his term to limit SS protection on all future Presidents to 10 years after they leave office and now Obama has signed a new law overriding that.
No Former President needs lifetime protection and yet here we are again.
I note here that Former President Nixon was the exception, he asked that he not have SS protection after he left office and paid for his own bodyguard.
All these guys make enough money to provide for themselves, not surprised that Obama would want lifetime servants for himself and his family.
To: elcid1970
Better check the capacity of the mags those SS guys have in their sidearms and get rid of the scary assault rifles in their cars.
