Most gun laws are set by the state, but with gun shows, local police chiefs have some leeway.
Recently Waterbury Police Chief Michael Gugliotti made the news when he refused to grant organizers of a gun show a permit following the Newtown shooting, drawing on authority given to police chiefs and town executives by state statutes.
Gugliotti said he was concerned that guns sold at the show might one day be used in a mass shooting.
Police chiefs say the law gives them discretion in their municipality and allows them to determine whether a gun show is suitable. Critics say theres no reason for police to have a say about whether or not sellers can hold a gun show.
Permits to hold a gun show must be obtained from a municipalitys police chief, warden of the borough or first selectman, according to state statutes. Southington Police Chief Jack Daly, also president of the Connecticut Police Chiefs Association, said its a good local control measure.
Its each chief who knows his town the best, Daly said. Who knows the town of Waterbury better than the Waterbury police chief?
In his 10 years as chief, Daly said, there have been no requests for a gun show in Southington. Whether hed grant a permit would depend on the particulars of the show, he said.
The most recent gun show in the area was held in 2011 at the former MountainRidge event center in Wallingford...

Maybe this police chief should make sure nobody sneezes for fear of starting a flu epidemic. What a maroon.
Funny thing, I see my police chief at gun shows all the time as a customer, hang with him at the range, and I have a feeling he may be a freeper as he keeps posting links from here on his facebook.
Not too worried here.
Yet another cop who never understood his oath of office.
I have read of law enforcement guns being misplaced or stolen. Couldn’t they be used in mass shootings?
With that logic, he should hand his guns over.
Now they're trying the same thing in Travis county and Austin but the Texas Attorney General basically told them it wasn't going to fly - they could try it, but they'd loose the case and cost the county or city, whichever one tried it, a lot of money.
Look at this illogically insane non-sequitur statement by a gun-control group in Connecticut:
“All guns start with a legal sale from a licensed dealer.
Yet in Connecticut, more than 85 percent of gun crimes
are committed by people who cannot legally purchase guns.-
Based on a review of 290 incidents of gun crime where the
origin of the gun was identified.”

“...concerned that guns sold at the show might one day be used in a mass shooting.”
Close-down the car dealerships and bars, too, chief. They’re more likely to result in deaths than firearms.
I've heard that the military and the police officers would NOT go after law abiding citizens who are protected under the Second Amendment and own guns to protect themselves, their families against injury from either the thugs OR a socialist govt. such as ours, who want to take our guns away to control us, as all good socialists in other countries do. There will be exceptions, of course, but as i read it, the military and police officers are fed up with obozo, and know that they took an oath to defend and uphold the Constitution, our Freedom and Liberty AND NOT A PRESIDENT. And these same men and women would not risk their lives for a socialist directive to take guns away from those who have a right to own them, as we ALL do, except if you're a thug who uses it to rob and kill people. And we all know the THUGS have guns, as well as those people protecting presidents, and others who value their life, but think they can deprive us of our rights and jeopardize our safety in this society. To that I say bullsh*t...remember, delay, obstruct, refuse, sabotage any effort by the left to take your guns away from you...remember, first they come for your guns, and then they can come for YOU.
I can’t find an exception for police chiefs in the Second Amendment.
Perhaps the chief should be institutionalized until that possible day when he is capable of cogent thought.
They tried this crap in Houston and the court slapped them down.
Said if you’re going to allow someone to have a craft show, you have to let someone else have a gun show.
Can’t discriminate, you know...
That not correct. The Texas Constitution preempts all city and county laws.

The Waterbury Police Chief said that he will refuse a Gun Show Permit to anyone requesting one, even though during the ten years he has been Police Chief, No one has ever requested a permit.
He went out of his way to make news when there was no news there.
What a moron Waterbury has for a Police Chief !
Do you suppose that’s why obama wants a brownshirt civilian army?
Talk about a one dimensional view of the world.
I'm concerned that one of his departments weapons might one day be used in a mass shooting. Hand them over chief!
I guess Waterbury doesn’t want any sales tax receipts. Eh. BFD. Different town next time.
