McChrystal: Time to think about bringing back the draft?
Hot Air ^ | January 13, 2013 | Jazz Shaw

General Stanley McChrystal is still making the rounds plugging his new book, as well as talking about any old issue of the day the media cares to toss his way. He sat down on Face the Nation this morning and hit a few of the standard questions on Afghanistan, gun control and Chuck Hagel, before Bob Schieffer decided to ask him whether or not it was time to bring back the draft. (H/T NRO)

When asked about his thoughts on implementing a draft on CBS’s Face the Nation, General Stanley A. McChrystal said national service would have a positive impact because it would “bind people to their nation” and “pull people together in shared experiences.”

Just to get it in context, here’s the video and a transcript of a few of the applicable comments for you.

(VIDEO AT LINK)

Schieffer: Would you favor a draft?

McChrystal: I personally believe that national service is important for the nation, and that’s having all young people serve a term of national service. Certainly not all military. But I believe those things do have two effects. One, those things that bind people to their nation are important, and another thing is that we’re also a nation that doesn’t get to know each other too well. Someone from one part of an inner city never meets another person from an upper class neighborhood. We need some things that pull people together in shared experience. We need to be ten years after the fact when they are meeting somewhere, ‘Where did you serve?’ begins a connection that allows them to move on because we are getting too fragmented in my view...

Read the directives of Executive Order 13603. Odinga created his private army, using conscription under that EO.

The draft is already in place. It only needs the go-code from the White Hut.

And just how the hell can we afford to pay for the millions who would need to be fed, housed, clothed, and cared for instead of finding a job and contributing to our already massive spending burden??

Idiots like this think the money to do this crap grows on trees...

Are you talking about draftees? Or welfare bums?

I’m confused here.

I served two tours in Korea. Many of the ROK (aka South Korea) army personnel I served with (they’ve had a draft since forever) were the sons of big industrial tycoons, generals, admirals and politicians. Nobody gets out of the draft there except for physical disability.

“Neither slavery nor involuntary servitude, except as a punishment for crime whereof the party shall have been duly convicted, shall exist within the United States, or any place subject to their jurisdiction.”

Doesn’t say “except when we want to use you to fight and die”. If you can’t attract soldiers, you are either not paying enough, or nobody feels your cause makes sense.
Increase the pay for a grunt to 100k a year and you’ll have all you want. Not patriotic? I dont see congressfools taking the pay of a private during wartime. I don’t see Lockheed execs willing to take a generals pay to be careful they don’t profit from the war.
No,,only the grunt is expected to give his services and life away for a pittance of pay to demonstrate his patriotism.

Modern Generals are nightmarish and have no respect for freedom.
And i’ll say it, it comes from life spent in the childlike world of the military. After all the holy talk is stripped away, they live in little centrally planned utopias. How many beers may you drink,, may i own a gun., lock up your gun at the armory, follow the rules very carefully,, you need a haircut, etc etc. Even the clerks at the PX can act like little martinets.
While that is necessary to create a disciplined fighting force, a lifetime there fills them with dread of the chaos of civilian life. Occasionally you see some retirees that dont make the adjustment well. They become royal pains in the ass in HOAs, complaining about a neighbors grass that is 2.5 inches tall when the rule reads 2 inches,,,etc etc.

And last of all, if you pack the military with homos, put the homos in charge, strictly muzzle the chaplains, let major Hassan evaluate them after deployment, and decide America needs to fight in Central Africa etc etc..
No,,,you certainly won’t get my kids to play with.

Wouldn’t a mandatory national service youth be the same as a welfare bum when you look at the bottom line?

Sooooo...instead of using the draft to fight and win the Nation's wars, he wants to use it for social engineering?

That is what all these idiot liberals want - a great big, gay, love-fest where everyone likes each other and hugs and sleeps together!

Poor inner-city kid meets rich upper-crust soldier and instantly, they can see how their lives are practically the exact same: except, when the rich soldier gets off work, he drives down to his condo on the beach in his new Porche and spends the weekend on the beach and the inner-city soldier walks back to the barracks and plays video games! PRACTICALLY THE SAME!

I spent 10 years in the Marine Corps and meet many great friends, from many different walks of life, of many different races, but none of them were because we FORCED to serve our Country! We all volunteered for those fun and games!

Take it from me, conscription would set back race relations in the military (and society) by 40 years - I guarantee it! And THAT is what the liberals really like!

Draftees fought WWII, Vietnam was mostly volunteers, and draftees make fine soldiers, superior to females.

It is easier for drill sergeants to turn 18 year old draftees into warriors and change their minds about the challenges and fun of soldiering, than to change the realities of the limitations of the female sex.

This isn’t about a draft anyway, it is about national service.

The Supreme Court has ruled against you innumerous cases. It is the exception they get away with.

“One volunteer is preferred to three ‘pressed men.”

Considering the complexity of modern war machines, the ratio is likely even higher in many military specialties.

Probably. But at least a draftee would add value. They would actually segue into makers rather than takers.

I guess the real problem is just how do you indoctrinate a welfare queen into a real solder?

And WHAT do you do with its spawn? (Laqishiada, Purelle, La-a, Quonsetta and so on?)

The WWI draft was ruled legal because When Congress declared war, the Wilson administration logic was there were no draftees. The nation had “volunteered” collectively,, through it's congress.

The supreme court rubber stamped it. But no matter what the black robed mystics and mandarins SAY it actually means. It was written in plain english, and was short and precise

It's slavery.

1. Hard to burn a draft card if there is no draft.

2. No reason to run to Canada if there is no draft.

3. No reason to protest on college campuses if there is no draft.

Three reasons why the left wants the draft back.
