There already is a national gun registry. It’s called the NRA membership list.

A colleague made an interesting point this morning. If the NRA and its paranoid membership are so worried about the government creating a national gun registry, lest the government use that list to confiscate guns, they should stop worrying: The best list in the country already exists. It’s called the NRA membership.

Sure, the NRA membership list doesn’t contain a gun registry of “all” firearms owners in America. But it does contain a list of many of the most paranoid, crazy, militant gun owners. The very people a “fascist” government would be most concerned about.

Why does this matter?

Well, the NRA keeps saying that [insert Democrat here] is going to come to take away your guns. And that’s why the NRA doesn’t want the government creating a national gun registry. The list, they fear, might be used by the “jackbooted thugs” as a veritable shopping list of available guns to confiscate:

Interestingly, the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF) is already barging into gun dealers shops across the country violating the McClure-Volkmer Act by violating gun owner’s privacy by copying the shop’s 4473s the agency does not already have an electronic copy of.

New York Governor Andrew Cuomo -– a man who gives you a pretty good idea of where gun control is going -– said, on the front page of the New York Times, that “confiscation” of firearms is an option. Obviously, having a registration list makes such a task much easier.

So I have to laugh when I see the NRA ginning up paranoia amongst gun owners, in an effort to list-build and get donations, such as the appeal the NRA made in its recent disgusting ad targeting the Obama girls...

People like this are on another planet. I had coffee with one this morning. The guy I met actually said that gun owners are responsible for the CT school shooting and for the deaths of those kids.

It was an interesting conversation. Most of these people are afraid of firearms and think only the govt should have them.

Quite the load of brain-dead babble. And I keep seeing this unsourced allegation:

Interestingly, the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF) is already barging into gun dealers shops across the country violating the McClure-Volkmer Act by violating gun owner’s privacy by copying the shop’s 4473s the agency does not already have an electronic copy of.

It would be nice if someone would provide an actual link to this happening.

John, you ignorant slut... The NRA is NOT at all a partisan group. There are a number of dems that the NRA supports, simply due to the fact that there is only ONE thing they deal with... Gun rights. If a dem supports gun rights, the NRA will support them.

And members still only amount to a fraction of actual gun owners. Too make matters even worse (for this idiot), the vast majority of guns don't even need to be registered at all.

I personally would much rather face an attacker who is armed with an "assault rifle" than one armed with a 12 gauge shotgun.

I don’t recall ever having read a story of a shooting that mentioned the killer was a member of the NRA.How can they be considered gun nuts?

However if there was one I am sure a FReeper will find it , and tell me about it.

The local sheriff said that he'd rather face a gang banger with an "assault rifle" any day over one p.o.'ed farmer with a scoped bolt action. The farmer would hit what he shot at.

‘Most of these people are afraid of firearms and think only the govt should have them.’

Not at all true. Many of these people are gun owners. Their view is that they’ll still be allowed to have theirs after the ‘dust settles’. Its a concept similar to OCare waivers. Its hard to understand why conservatives cant get a clue on this point. They can’t rule exc from the muzzle of a gun.

Most of the gun owners I know, including myself, have never been NRA members. I’m not into giving money to advocacy groups, don’t trust them to not get confused about their mission.

As they always do, they will confiscate and call it something else.

Off topic, but that's also their position on jobs. :-)

Does this fool get paid to write? My seventh grade English teacher would have had him sitting in a corner wearing a pointy hat.

Actually ... not a terrible point, particularly considering the source. The NRA membership list probably would be a prime target for Obama if he started confiscating.

I doubt that the NRA would turn over its membership list to the federal government.
