Reflections on Gun Control and the Actions of a Tyrant...

On December 1, 1958, a garbage can ignited in a basement stairwell at Our Lady of the Angels School, on Chicago’s west side. The fire spread quickly, and 95 lives were lost that awful day, 92 of them children.

There was a chance it was arson, or just a boy playing with matches at the foot of the stairs – though it could have been something as innocent as a surprised smoker ditching the cigarette before being caught in the act. We’ll never know for sure; we only know it started in that garbage can.

In the aftermath of the fire, careful study resulted in a number of changes to building codes, not just in Chicago but nationwide. The windows that were designed for cross-ventilation, the petroleum-based floor waxes, the wooden stair cases and stair rails… all these typical building features turned a school into a firetrap. Revised building codes would require plentiful and well-marked fire alarms, and designs and building materials that would retard a fire’s spread, rather than facilitate it.

Nobody proposed the elimination of trash cans; nobody called for an end to the production of matches, or cigarettes, or garbage...

Gun Control:

Not just wrong... but illegal, unconstitutional, destructive, bank-breaking, counter-productive...

In preparation to take the oath of office for his second time, the president is using the mass murders at Sandy Hook to justify unconstitutional measures that not only violate the rights of the law-abiding, but do nothing to reduce the culture of crime.

My thoughts on the matter are in my Illinois Review column today, if you're interested, here:

An earlier one with less people killed, but whole families perished was the BABBS SWITCH fire in 1924.

Then there was the New London TX school explosion which killed 295 students and teachers in 1937.

Life is not guaranteed as our politicians wish it to be.

Thank you John for posting such a well written, intelligent article. I was so captivated by every word it was if someone was calmly sitting in front of me talking over a cup of coffee. At what point? When will it happen? It must if things don’t change. My steps? Preparing, which most people are. Now trying to get plugged in. Because when “it” hits. They will shut down or control then internet so in depth. How will we reach out and communicate then?

Thank you, Captain, for your kind note. Much appreciated!

As for when the tyranny will begin in earnest... I’m just hoping that Congress does what they need to do, and the majority of states do what they need to do, before then.

The other options aren’t terribly promising!

Wouldn’t it be a hoot if it turned out to be the fact that Adam Lanza didn’t use the AR15 and left it in the car after all?
