President Obama Must Tackle Criminal Justice Reform in His Second Term
ACLU ^ | 1-21-2013 | Kara Dansky

President Obama is the first sitting president in recent history to speak out against criminal justice policies that hurt inner city and rural communities. This is a big deal.

With state budgets and vulnerable communities crippled by misguided criminal justice policies, the president is certainly right that the time for reform has come.

......

Over the last 40 years, our American criminal justice system has been brutally damaged by politicians’ commitment to misguided “tough-on-crime” policies. It started in the 1970s, on the heels of a major uptick in crime rates, but our obsession with incarceration quickly surpassed its utility. Since the 1990s crime has steadily decreased, and most researchers believe incarceration was only responsible for a small percentage of the decline. ......

The president is right—we need to get smart about how the criminal justice system operates. People have suffered tremendously under the tough-on-crime policies of the last several decades. ......

Of course ACLU does not overly concern itself to Justice itself, and certainly not "Justice For ALL" concept.

I say, tough! Don't like the criminal justice system? Don't do crime. Behave like a responsible huamn being, and nobody got no problem with that.

It will be interesting to see how a criminal attacks criminal justice.

“Re-form” to Communist Tyrant Hussein Obama means “ignore all parts of all laws that are consistent with the US Constitution.”

:: started in the 1970s, on the heels of a major uptick in crime rates ::

Doesn't that coincide with the establishment of The Great Welfare Giveaway Society?

Now, why would an increase of subsistence benefits to those not interested in participating in society cause an increase in crime?

So let me get this straight. The Democrats’ Great Society destroys the black family. The children turn to crime for which they are incarcerated. This is mostly done in Democrat controlled inner cities. Now, after the blacks are all locked up and the crime rate has decreased, they want to take our guns and let the criminals back out on the street.

Liberals are dangerous.

commitment to misguided “tough-on-crime” policies.

So being tough on crime is misguided?
I doubt the millions of victims of crime in America over the past 30 years would agree with you.
I stand with the victims not the crimials

An administration that deliberately refused to prosecute voter intimidation by “its people” and went after states that required id for voting is not an administration that knows anything about “justice.”

This makes perfect sense. Let the criminals out, and take the guns away from the law-abiding citizens. Then the burglars and muggers won’t be risking their lives when they practice their profession.

. . . our obsession with incarceration quickly surpassed its utility . . .

The ACLU is like the brat which Abe Lincoln used to tell about who murdered his parents and burned down their house, then asked the court for leniency because he was homeless and an orphan.

On one hand, there was (and in some areas still is) too much incarceration of petty criminals for petty crimes for pissant crap like smoking a joint. These could be better dealt with by house arrests, monitoring and requiring restitution.

On the other hand, there is also an ACLU promoted tendency to excuse criminal behavior for superficial reasons such as race or background and block capital punishment anytime, anywhere and under any circumstances for those who clearly merit a date with the needle, the noose or Old Sparky.

And "soft on crime" works so much better? MORON!

Depends. Some the concepts of “crime” have reached the heights of absurdity. A persistent puddle in your yard becomes a “wet land” and makes any further changes or development on your property illegal, or at least complicated.
Too darn many things are “crime.”

Problem is, many of jail beds are being filled perpetrators of “victimless crimes,” mostly drug-related.
