California: Sitting atop black gold, forgoing for the green?
Hot Air ^ | February 4, 2013 | Erika Johnsen

While touting his ostensible “all of the above” energy plan and working the campaign trail not so very long ago, President Obama would justify his many expensive green-energy plans by repeatedly saying something along the lines of, “America consumes 20 percent of the world’s oil, but only has two percent of its reserves” — which is about as bogus a statistic as it gets. America only having two percent of the world’s oil relies on measures of its proven reserves, i.e., the amount of oil that has both been discovered and is technologically and economically feasible to extract, remaining static.

New technology means that oil deposits the world over are suddenly a lot more available for cost-effective human productivity, and while certain states have taken advantage of the effectively growing oil-and-gas abundance — North Dakota has been raking it in by tapping into the Bakken shale formation — California is sittin’ pretty atop a formation four times the size of that one. The NYT reports:

These wells are tapping crude directly from what is called the Monterey Shale, which could represent the future of California’s oil industry — and a potential arena for conflict between drillers and the state’s powerful environmental interests. …

Comprising two-thirds of the United States’s total estimated shale oil reserves and covering 1,750 square miles from Southern to Central California, the Monterey Shale could turn California into the nation’s top oil-producing state and yield the kind of riches that far smaller shale oil deposits have showered on North Dakota and Texas.

For decades, oilmen have been unable to extricate the Monterey Shale’s crude because of its complex geological formation, which makes extraction quite expensive. But as the oil industry’s technological advances succeed in unlocking oil from increasingly difficult locations...

Do they taste like chicken or panda because sometimes the kids get particular and want to know before I take them the KFC or Panda Palace.

Slow fire between 200 and 230 F, a good seasoning rub, mop every hour or so and hope they don’t taste like javalina.

I couldn’t really taste what the Panda ribs tasted like because of all the car exhaust fumes in the air, we were at the drive in where the girls served us by roller skates and since it cold, all the cars were running our heaters.

Yes. But would be easier with the EPA de-clawed and de-fanged.

I had my own apartment in high school and worked in gas stations, for that 19 or 21 cents per gallon, we would check your tires, your oil, clean your windshield, and head and tail lights, and give you free drinking glasses, and handle the entire back and forth trips of paying and bringing back change.

Bringing wild SW hogs in is a gamble. Shoot them from your truck if you can. They are quite gamely and are blind from what I can tell after removing their eyes.

“Folks don’t remember .29 ethyl.”

I was paying $.13 a gallon when I was in high School and I had our own tanks in my business and until 1974 we were paying $.29/gallon.

The ‘crisis” in 74 was caused by an article in the L.A. Times that got everyone to run to the gas station and fill their tanks which emptied the station tanks,.

Everyone in the country that was getting bulk delivery gasoline had been on rationing since 1972 so when the stations went empty they couldn't buy any more until the next month.

THERE WAS NEVER ANY SHORTAGE!!!

The service was incredible, besides all those things that we did routinely, we would do most anything you asked, we would check the radiator and test and fill it, test the battery and fill it with distilled water, check out noises if you asked us to, we felt responsible for your automobile, can you imagine how women (and men as well) would like that service today.

We were locals, born and raised in America and we could give you real directions, and the owner was usually working during the day shift, the actual owner, the big cheese, the man who really, really, wanted you to make his station, your station, which means that we got to know you, and your car very well. The customer was king.

Dale, I have seen you on this board forever. I don’t recall saying much to you. I respect a man that has afforded his opportunities and did well. Some folks don’t understand many things. An Oil Boom in America isn’t equating to the price at the pump.

Thanks for any input you may have.

I was fresh out of the Army in 1974 and at Brown and Root in Texas, some the ex oil field guys were saying that the oil companies were capping off good wells to take them off line.
