How the Gun-Control Movement Got Smart
The Atlantic ^ | 2-7-2013 | Molly Ball

Why are advocates so optimistic now when reform has failed so many times before? Because they have a totally new strategy

Here is how advocates of gun control used to talk about their cause: They openly disputed that the Second Amendment conferred the right to own a gun. Their major policy goals were to make handguns illegal and enroll all U.S. gun owners in a federal database. The group now known as the Brady Campaign to Prevent Gun Violence was once known as Handgun Control Inc.; a 2001 book by the executive director of the Violence Policy Center was entitled Every Handgun Is Aimed at You: The Case for Banning Handguns.

Contrast that with what you see today: Gun-control groups don't even use the term "gun control," with its big-government implications, favoring "preventing gun violence" instead. Democratic politicians preface every appeal for reform with a paean to the rights enshrined in the Second Amendment and bend over backwards to assure "law-abiding gun owners" they mean them no ill will. Even the president, a Chicago liberal who once derided rural voters' tendency to "cling to guns or religion," seeks to assure gun enthusiasts he's one of them by citing a heretofore-unknown enthusiasm for skeet shooting, adding, "I have a profound respect for the traditions of hunting that trace back in this country for generations. And I think those who dismiss that out of hand make a big mistake."

A frequent question in the current battle over gun control is why anyone should expect reform to succeed now when it's failed repeatedly for the last 20 years. Maybe this is why: Between then and now, advocates of gun control got smarter. They've radically changed their message into one that's more appealing to Middle America and moderate voters. ......

By smart, she means that they gave up all pretence of honesty and openly lie about their intentions and desired result.

That is exactly the left in a nutshell. A complete reliance on lies and deception. They are despicable.

HOW THEY GOT SMART??

They are freaking GHOULS.

They will use every tragedy - BEFORE THE FUNERALS ARE EVEN OVER - to push their agendas.

All without debate or input from the public - as quickly as they can while emotions are high.

Never let a crisis go to waste. Never let the people decide.

I question the accuracy of that FBI map only because it shows two counties in California along the Nevada border as having “gun violence.” Those two counties are Mono and Alpine. Both are very rural, Alpine County has something less than 300 people living there. I recall that an outsider driving through there a few years ago commited a crime at the only business establishment in the county, otherwise there is no “gun violence” there.

Mono County is rural and Conservative, ranchers, hunters, outdoorsmen, etc., except for the Mammoth Lakes Ski Resort which has attracted a lot of weathly Liberals (whose votes turned the county blue like Aspen, CO), and illegal aliens to work as cooks and busboys. The illegals and the drug dealing ski bums are the only ones committing crimes there, but not with guns.

We thought the same about govt controlled healthcare, but here we are today.

Personally I would have no problem with some background checks for purchases of handguns , IF it weren't this bunch of leftists pushing it. Because it's "the community organizer" and all the rest of those who gave us Fast & Furious , I simply don't trust their intentions. They had this legislation and "grass roots" organizing ready to go before Newtown. It was as if they were waiting for an incident. IMHO, F&F was supposed to be the catalyst, instead Newtown happened, which for the left was even better.

This is an extremely sick bunch we have in this administration. They truly are a cross between black panthers and Stalinists.

John McCain
“Convicted felons have been able to buy and sell thousands of guns at gun shows because of a loophole in the law. Many were later used in crimes, and that’s wrong ....”

Prove it John!

“universal background checks”

It will require drug lords and gang bangers to conduct background checks before arming new recruits.....

Conservatives need to emphasize that NONE of these measures impact the criminal.

Further, NOTHING is being done to disarm the criminals, only the law abiding citizen.

Gun-control groups don't even use the term "gun control," with its big-government implications, favoring "preventing gun violence" instead.

This directly appeals to liberal soccer moms and feminized metro-sexual fathers, when they can be found.

Too many people in America have been conditioned to avoid any risk and any physical confrontation. Dial 911 and die.

“and bend over backwards to assure “law-abiding gun owners” they mean them no ill will.”

In other words, they are LYING THROUGH THEIR TEETH!

No one is talking about taking you guns. This seems to be one of their favorites – often spewed with disdain that you are being paranoid etc.

Again, this is just another distraction meant to fool some into thinking that the Proggies aren’t doing exactly what they are doing.

This is east to refute – simply copy and paste quotations and links for the variation socialist luminaries of the left calling for CONFISCATION and variations thereof.

The best is the quotation from Andrew “Gun Confiscation” Cuomo:

“Confiscation could be an option” Andrew Cuomo http://www.nytimes.com/2012/12/21/nyregion/cuomo-says-he-will-outline-gun-measures-next-month.html?_r=1&;

MSNBC’s Ed Schultz Talks Gun ‘Confiscation’ http://newsbusters.org/blogs/dan-gainor/2012/12/16/msnbc-s-ed-schultz-talks-gun-confiscation

Muhlbauer: Ban, seize semi-auto weapons http://carrollspaper.com/main.asp?SectionID=1&SubSectionID=1&ArticleID=14934&TM=35600.75 State Rep. Dan Muhlbauer, D-Manilla, says Iowa lawmakers should ban semi-automatic guns and “start taking them” from owners.

Feinstein: ‘Purpose Is to Dry Up the Supply of These Weapons Over Time’ www.weeklystandard.com/ blogs/ feinstein-purpose-dry-supply-these-weapons-over-time_697629.html Diane Feinstein on Gun Control “Turn ‘Em All In!” http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=V-b45FdDN3s&feature=player_detailpage

San Diego Police Chief William Lansdowne, said in the interview it may take a generation, but guns will eventually be taken off the streets through new laws. http://www.washingtonguardian.com/top-cops-get-political-guns

There are other examples of course; this is just a sampling.
Proggies like to throw out this LIE with abandon, hoping that no one will call them one it.

Again, don’t fall for their attempts at changing the rules in the middle of the game. The supposition was that no one was talking about it and those examples certainly show that.

The point here is twofold – one to shown the Proggies that they are abject LIARS – like their leader – and that CONFISCATION is being discussed.

Sorry about that.

I question the accuracy of that FBI map

I am running a few searches later today to locate the original source.

As far as individual discrepancies, I don't doubt that could be some errors.

I agree that the gun-grabbing bunch knows that direct attacks on gun owners won’t get them anywhere, but I think they’re still 2 steps behind. Their basic problem is a LOT MORE people now own guns than did even 15 years ago, and there is virtually NOTHING they can do to those people that won’t result in a snap-back. Also, gun owners are much better educated, having been through Clinton’s “Assault Weapons” ban of the past.

We do need to get fighting, but we should not get depressed, these people know they’re getting their butts kicked and they are trying their best to get a few crumbs, at least at the federal level.

At the state level, with many states solid blue, it’s a tough fight for us. But those states, again, lose in the end. As an example, how can California, and New York (now) EVER hope to draw a gun-owning Texan (or Floridian) to move their for employment? Not going to happen, and they will pay, BIG TIME.

The crapola coming out of California is enough to petrify anyone.

Yep. California and New York. I'd like to think they'll overplay their hand and suffer a '94-era electoral backlash but the demographic changes in this country leave me less than optimistic with this scenario. Sad truth is outside of the ever-shrinking white male demographic, there's little love for assault rifles and high-cap magazines and an increasing support for the so-called "common sense" gun control measures that Obama and his liberals are pimping to the country.
