Daily Caller Cigarette Review #2 (Hilarious!)
The Daily Caller ^ | February 9, 2013 | Patrick Howley, investigative reporter

The Natural American Spirit is produced by the Santa Fe Natural Tobacco Company, which sprang up in left-wing Santa Fe, New Mexico in the early 1980s with a new innovative approach to cigarette-making. The American Spirit consists of “100 % Additive-Free Tobacco,” without the nuanced chemical combinations that give most mass-marketed cigarettes their savory taste and potent impact. As such, the Spirit satisfies a growing niche market of left-leaning types who want smoking’s well-documented coolness without earning it through hard respiratory work.

This brand’s very existence is a response to the cancer research conducted by various academic elites in the second half of the 20th century and promoted by the mainstream media. Like most products that appropriate the hallmarks of a great American original but update them for our sexless and mediocre modern era, the American Spirit is a banal letdown from the very first drag.

Packaged in innocuous baby-blue and yellow packs and decorated by a portrait of an American Indian, the American Spirit purports to provide “full-bodied taste.”

Slow-burning as to be lifeless, the Spirit requires multiple inhalations before a sufficient smoking process even begins. Its taste, if detectable at all, suggests little more than smoke itself. Cigarette enjoyers weaned on superior chemically-tinged brands wait patiently for that God-given all-American burst of tough pleasure. But as the seconds pass we find the sensitive backs of our throats woefully unfulfilled. One drag barely necessitates a proper exhalation unto itself. Even after two or three consecutive puffs, the smoke omitted from the user’s mouth is negligible...

I started rolling my own cigarettes when the tax on manufactured ones went up by a buck a pack here in IL. A carton of smokes costs me about $12.00. I’ve deprived the State of Illinois hundreds in taxes since I started.

As a bonus my hand rolls are what a cigarette is supposed to taste like. I prefer The Good Stuff Silver and Premiere tubes. They burn right, it’s pure North Carolina tobacco, rice paper, and a cotton filter. I have also noticed that I don’t smoke nearly as many. The process of making my own forces me to slow down and enjoy it.

My early tobacco starts are up. I will transplant them to larger containers sometime in the next month. Nothing like growing your own and stiffing the tax man.

I smoke the brand “blu” e-cigarette. I tried another brand but couldn't keep the battery charged at the same time the cartridge had fluid in it, was constantly dealing with one or the other not “full” and had to put fluid in the cartridge. Going anywhere was a disaster as one part wouldn't be working.

“blu” is much easier. The cartridges are already filled, use and pitch. There is a case that takes a charge and a place inside to put a battery so it is charged when you need it and holes inside to store extra cartridges. You can take that on a trip and actually be able to change cigarettes, stick the battery drained one in the charger hole and it charges to be ready when you need it. With the 100 size, a cartridge lasts as long as one and a half pack of cigs. That is much better than the other one I had, they were empty more than they were filled.

There is one feature of the carry/charger box (it's a little larger than a regular pack of cigarettes), that I don't use. You can set it to start blinking on and off if there is another blu cigarette within so many feet of you. If you have that feature on, any person that has their blu box feature on, can find you. I guess you are supposed to talk to this person - no, thanks. It also blinks when it comes close to where blu cigarettes are sold. I never turn that blink feature on. Don't want to know where some one else is who is smoking one - man, that is a dumb feature.

In 2010, California Gov. Jerry Brown successfully forced Spirit packs to note that this product is no healthier than typical cigarettes.

A liberal friend of mine smoked "healthy" cigarettes for many years. She firmly believed that Evil Republican Big Tobacco's additives caused cancer, not the burning tobacco itself. By avoiding those additives, she thought she would be safe. She required no proof of her theory. What can I say, she was a liberal.

She died of small-cell carcinoma of the lung when she was in her early fifties.

I didn't agree with her about much, but I do miss her.

I did the same. Except for two weeks before the tax kicked in, I cleaned out every tobacco shop within 20 miles of its supplies of Stokkebye and Bali Shag cans. I spent about $300 in 2009 and didn’t run out until last year (I use Good Stuff pipe tobacco now as well).

I’ve cut down dramatically since I started rolling. I’m down to about three a day on most days.

I am using the blu cigarette in conjunction with the regular cigarettes (a regular one after a meal or before bedtime and waking up time with coffee) but right now I'm only using the blu e-cigarette. I also use the blu one when my son visits so smoke isn't around.

If I get that tobacco growing and manage to get it through the curing process (through which you will direct me), then I will use those and the blu ones and forget completely about the outrageous price Gov. Perry and friends put on our cigarettes. You notice, he doesn't up the tax on liquor - no, he and his political friends drink that, so we get the higher tax, not him. That last tax raise he put on our cigs made me furious. Don't tax his liquor but tax our cigs. A pox on him for that. Using the blu cigarette, he gets no cigarette tax. He only gets sales tax like is on everything.

See, I can't stand politicians who figure they will load down the least number of voters they can with a big tax so there will be fewer voters to complain - just make the tax really big to get the money you want.

They stuck it to smokers because they have made them a whipping boy no one wants around, so tax them and they can't do jack about it.

I'll use blu e-cigarettes to get around his tax and my own home grown tobacco if I manage to get that done and he gets no high cigarette tax. He needs to tax his liquor bottles.

I vape with the Ego C pass-thru. You can charge it in the wall socket or any USB device. One charge lasts all day. I fill it with my fave tobacco flavors. Found a real good Cuban cigar flavor. Been off tobacco for a year and a half.

I’m not sure what brand he uses but our son has been using an ecig now for about a year. He gets the liquid stuff in the mail. Once or twice he’s run out before the refill arrives and he resorts to a “real” cigarette and he hates it. He has also used the little tic tacs to tide him over. It’s worked for him. Nicotine addiction is supposedly harder to kick than heroin. Proud of him. For a bunch of other reasons but this is really helping his health.

Is vapeing the same thing as smoking an E-cig?

Yes. A battery, atomizer, e-liquid of varying flavors and nicotine levels. There are good ones for cheap, and cheap ones that are very expensive, if you know what I mean. Don’t buy it at the drugstore or the mall.

The way I smoke now is I just smoke part of a cigarette at a time relighting it three or four times. Will they work like that?

With the blu, a usb port for computer will charge the batteries, then the “case” has a usb, plus cord to plug in a wall socket to charge the case and the cig battery in it right then. The case usb cable also plugs in the usb port in the car. So that’s two ways to charge in the house, one charged case to carry and it charges a cig battery, plus the case plugs into the car usb port. You can always charge a battery one way or another right then.

I’m not familiar with the Ego C pas-thru, plus you use the word “vape” and I don’t get that word unless you’re talking about the action that happens when the liquid in the cartridge vaporizes and causes the vapor that looks like smoke.

“He gets the liquid stuff in the mail. Once or twice he’s run out before the refill arrives...”

The one I had before had the actual liquid like you are talking about. With the blu, the cartridge is already filled and you just screw it on and when it’s empty (equals one and a half packs before it’s empty), throw it away. I don’t have to deal with filling the cartridges up.

Yes, vaping is the word used instead of smoking. The Ego line has a larger battery (think small cigar). That’s why it lasts a long time. An attached tank system you fill yourself lasts a long time, too. I buy my e-liquid from different suppliers and mix my own custom blends. Finally found a few that actually taste like tobacco. A FReeper turned me on to these.

“The way I smoke now is I just smoke part of a cigarette at a time relighting it three or four times. Will they work like that?”

The liquid in the cartridge is only used when you inhale on the cigarette. If you never puff on the end of the cigarette, you won't use any liquid. However, the battery is still being used whether you puff on it or not. To make the battery last longer, slightly unscrew the cartridge from the battery to stop the connection/drain on the battery. Do it that way if you tend to take a puff, then wait a while before puffing again - the battery will last longer before needing a charge.
