The incredibly foolish Chief Charlie Beck

LA Police Chief Charlie Beck has made a bad decision. Life is a series of decisions. No one should understand this more than Los Angeles Police Chief Charlie Beck.

For obvious reasons, in any situation your ideal position is one of “win or break even.” Those who are in the public area, especially big city police chiefs, more often than not find themselves in the opposite position; “lose or break even,” but that’s part of the job.

Since the “lose or break even” dilemma is virtually unavoidable as a rule, voluntarily placing yourself in one is especially foolish. When the best you can do is not lose you ought to not go there, but Chief Beck doesn’t seem to understand this simple logic.

Beck was in the unenviable position of overseeing the everyday functions of a big city police department AND supervising the most important manhunt in recent memory. But at the top of his “to do” list was finding Christopher Dorner, a hate filled mongrel who wanted to kill cops because he was fired from the LAPD in 2007.

As a rookie Dorner was judged to have falsely reported seeing his training officer kick a mentally ill man during an arrest. The evidence against Dorner was persuasive enough to get him fired.

So Dorner went on a killing spree aimed at getting even with those he believed responsible for his firing. He had already killed three people including the daughter of the police captain who unsuccessfully represented him in his hearing and her companion.

A few hours later he ambushed two on duty uniformed police officers, killing one and wounding the other.

Clearly Beck had big problems, but he added to them by announcing he would review Dorner’s case. This was foolish beyond words!....

Unfortunately for Chief Beck and the LAPD this won't end with Dorner's death. There will be FOIAs demanding the results of not only the orginial hearing, but the review as well. There was ABSOLUTELY NOTHING to be gained by this review and Beck show have known better.

Word on the street is, this story has no good guys in it. Dorner was a murderous lunatic, but the LAPD has the reputation of a gang with badges. No good guys.

What nobody seems to be mentioning is what Dorner was doing from 2009 until now.

Pet Peeve but why do we have to read past the third paragraph to know what the article is about? Everyone is into long clever intros that have nothing to do with the topic until explained 3 pages later.

“My dad taught me never to poke an armadillo in the eye. I cherish those long sunny Texas days dad and I would spend hunting, fishing, and talking about life.... Which is why President Obama would have benefitted from dad’s advice when drafting his SOTU speech....”

Seems plausible that either they covered up the truth of Dorner’s accusation back then, or he already was an overbearing paranoid and made it all up. He’s no different than a hundred idiots who shot up their workplace or their ex girlfriend’s workplace. Maybe they were wronged but so what? This kook was murdering innocents 5 years later rather than move on with his life.

But hey let’s now encourage blacks to murder people everytime they think they get a raw deal.

"What nobody seems to be mentioning is what Dorner was doing from 2009 until now."

Sounds like he was living with his mom, participating in the Naval Reserves, working as a security guard, and buying guns and ammo.

What are the odds that some slime ball lawyer will file a wrongful death suit, on behalf of Dorner’s family..against the LAPD?

Man, some of you fellas just never get it, do you? I'm going to have to stop reading here. Some of the ugly comments on these threads may very well be inciting violence. You should't post stuff like that. You're rubbing salt in people's wounds.

“and i doubt the powers want to take this guy alive and let him talk”

When the POS murdered 4 innocent people he lost his right to live in a free society. Now the lefties are all concerned if he got a fair hearing. Keep in mind the LAPD has a large minority presence and its commissioners in the past thirty years have been mostly black.

Sometimes the coach is right.
Other times he is a brain dead effing moron.
This is one of the latter.

The police in LA made blunders that probably rise to criminal levels.

Evaluating whether the target of this man hunt was someone who had been legitimately wronged and was driven by a twisted sense of justice or whether he was just plain delusional is not one of those blunders. Given the stupid crap the LAPD has been caught doing in recent years, humbling the department in public was reasonable and over all a good PR move.

Unrelenting arrogance is not the virtue the coach imagines it to be.

The killing spree confirms that they were right to get rid of him, whatever the pretext. The fact that he was ever allowed to wear a badge suggests to me they should review the process that allowed him to be hired in the first place. How did their screening process miss the fact that he was a ticking time bomb.

The only thing worse than a fascist in charge of a police department is an incompetent fascist. Oh, hi there, Charlie Beck...

How about the inappropriateness of deploying 2000 cops to catch one guy? And then sending them out of their jurisdiction?

Once Reserve Officer Crazy Pants fled the city and the county, it was incumbent on the LAPD to butt out. But they do whatever the hell they want when they’re going after someone who shot “one of their own.”

There was a shooting of an LA school district police officer at a high school one morning near my house a couple years ago. (Turned out the guy had discharged his own weapon in a weird love triangle, but whatever...) Word went out: OFFICER DOWN! And over a THOUSAND cops cordoned off my neighborhood for hours. For miles. The number of cops was confirmed in the LA Times.

Nobody was allowed back into their homes till late at night. If you drove out of the area or left on foot, you weren’t allowed back in. Cops standing around on corners threatened the residents with arrest, using abusive language — residents who were just asking what the hell was going on and when could they return to their homes?

They unilaterally suspended the Bill of Rights. Because it was “one of their own.”

Why are cops entitled to that kind of overwhelming, unnecessary response when clearly nobody else is? When did our overseers enact special rights and privileges for themselves?

It was a real eye-opener. The LAPD is completely out of control.

The great irony of all this hero-making of Dorner and demonizing of LAPD is that the entire rampage was because Dorner was denied HIS wish to be a part of that racist gang with badges. But no one ever accused ‘the street’ of being terribly bright. Uneducated and ill-informed is more like it.
