One of the few people I have met with first hand experience of such a situation told me that liquor and cigarettes beat gold any day. Needless to say you have to be able to secure your inventory, being the wholesale supplier and having your customers help with security was one technique.

Put more bluntly, having some of the rougher locals working for you can enhance one's security.

I concur... been adding a jug every time I visit the Military commissaries, though I don't touch the stuff. Been doing that for a few years, could stock a big bar, or throw one helluva party with it all!

As far as tobacco as a trade item, we started stashing a few cans of "Top", "Bugle" and a few other brands before the big price jump. It too may prove to be a wise investment when the SHTF. Many smokers would kill to get a smoke when nothing is available... We be ready for that as well... LOL!
