I loved the Gorn episode reference in Galaxy Quest.
In the 1999 film Galaxy Quest, as actor Jason Nesmith (”Cmdr. Peter Quincy Taggart”) battles the giant Rock Creature on a barren planet (with his shirt ripped off), Guy Fleegman (”Crewman #6”) suggests he try to find the makings of a “rudimentary lathe”.

Unlike Mythbusters, these guys were able to make the Gorn Cannon actually work.

The theory, according to them, is that Mythbusters intentionally sabotaged their own experiment to avoid lawsuits in the event someone tried to do it themselves.
They make the gun powder using the same materials as Kirk, with a smaller bamboo stick, and they shoot the thing a few times.
