The Feds also pay farmers not to grow crops.

Why July 1st?

People don't riot in the winter.

America haters want to permanently ruin, take over, or co-opt the 4th of July.

It takes about 3-4 days for tempers to really flare.

The 1st and 15th are Mil paydays and EBT recharging days...

Let us imagine for a moment that we would be assured of living 70 years at any point, and anywhere, in history. Which 70 years would you choose and where would you choose to live them. (assume the ability to travel at will...at least at the will allowable for the time period you have chosen.) I think I’d choose 1855 to 1925 in America...although air conditioning certainly makes modern times desirable. (yet listen to us bitch in spite of the easiest physical life that has ever been available.)

I might like to visit some other times, such as the time of the founding of America and framing of the constitution, but ...

... we were chosen for this time.

Thanks for that first hand account.

Strange how even here on FR there are people who think prepping is crazy. Even when they hear firsthand accounts like yours it seems to pass right over them.

In this state EBT food benefits are assigned dates from the 1st to the 10th for recharging, to spread out the crush a little. I think TANF benefits here are always on the 1st.

None the less if the tap gets turned off on the 1st, pretty much everyone will know about it by the 4th...

I remember seeing scenes of Sarajevo during the '94 Winter Olympics and thinking how tranquil the city looked ...how much like my own home town in the US.

A decade later Sarajevo descended into Hell.

The people who complain about our prepping, have not been through a hurricane with power going out while the wind is trying to tear up your house. Ike was in the middle of the night but no one was sleeping through that. It was a very large storm so it went on for hours with those 100 mph winds.

You don't know if your power will come back in one day or one month. You don't know if your water out of the faucet is safe to drink. If you have a tree in the middle of your house, and it didn't kill you, you are thankful.

Anyone who has been through a situation like that, and doesn't prepare for it the next time, is not smart enough to live, and may not the next time.

And, some of these people think we want it to happen. I dread hurricane season every year - I do not want that to happen. From June through October, I know if I want to live and have good water and food and be cool and be able to cook, I had better be prepared. People who don't, are fools.

You are soooo right. At least you get some advance notice. We have tornadoes with little or no warning. We have a basement, but I would like to have it reinforced.

That’s a Hubby job, and he isn’t moving very fast on it.

We get tornadoes here in this part of Texas, plus tornadoes are sometimes within hurricanes.

We don't have basements here, wish we did but our water table is so high here, you'd have a swimming pool instead of a basement. My downstairs bathroom is the safest room in the house so that is where the Yorkie and I go with some big cushions to put over us. I keep a survival backpack in that room as well.

I truly admire your grit. I got to have my basement in order to weather the storms during tornado season. I wouldn’t want to hang around during a hurricane either.

Of course, I try to forget all about the New Madrid Fault Line. We had an earthquake around 3.5 or 4 a little while back. I didn’t even realize it at first.

I thought that the helicopter was just flying too low and causing some reverberations. By the time I understood what was happening and jumped up - it was over.

Where we are is better than being in St. Louis or New Madrid, but not nearly as good as where I grew up. If I had it to do over, I probably would not have moved here for a lot of reasons only one of which is the weather.

True. Moochers will go lawless, they are already living a jungle morality (taking what they can get). Producers will do most anything to be allowed to keep on producing.

I saw it first hand. Civilization lasts only 3 days and then drops off like a cliff.

I completely appreciate Matt's exploits post-Sandy. The only quibble I have is the timeline.

I pointed it out a long time ago on another Prepper thread. The veneer of civility will peel away not within days, but within HOURS of the event.

1977 - NYC Blackout - grid goes offline at 9:30, riots/looting start 90 minutes later;
1992 - Miami with Andrew - the looting started even before the winds died down;
1992 - Los Angeles - trial verdict announced, the city burns an hour later;
2005 - NOLA during Katrina - chaos starts hours BEFORE the storm makes landfall;
2011 - London, UK riots - protest starts at 6PM, riots start three hours later;

Folks, the breakdown of civility is only a Molotov cocktail's throw away...

I don’t know how to reply all so you may want to resend this. I completely agree with you. Governor Christie and the power companies made damn sure to get power and gas to the inner cities right away. Newark was down for just a few hours. The only reason we had three days before things got out of hand was because I live in a rural area of NJ (yes, they exist). Once the crowds found out that 2 or 3 stations by us had generators and could dispense gas it was utter chaos. I went to make a quick run to town and it took me 4 hours to get back because the hordes had descended on this one gas station and there was no way to turn around. I learned a lot that day.

Oh, and a new time is open us. The hordes used twitter to broadcast which gas stations had fuel. There was a hash tag #njgas that directed thousands of people to these stations. That power could be used for good or evil

You might want to consider a Tri-fuel kit for your generator. I got mine from US Carborator. I can now run my Generac on gasoline, propane, or natural gas. A 100 lb tank of propane will run my house for about 3-1/2 days and it’s a hell of a lot cheaper than gasoline at 4 bucks a gallon.

To back up what Matt tells us, the rioters and looters in London in 2011 did the exact same thing. They used Blackberry Messenger, Twitter and Facebook to coordinate the riots and warn each other when the police were coming and where.

I think it's about time I post something I wrote about it all...

It sure does. We have 25 gallons of Sta-Bilized premium gas stored which we rotate through annually. But for long term generator fuel, it’ll be propane. We are saving to have a NG feed from the house installed but that needs to be done professionally.

That way we will have 3 possible fuel sources for electrical power for our home.

“Congregating with like minded people is going to be all important.”

I think the American fighting spirit cannot be overcome by any enemy, foreign or domestic, however one of the major weaknesses I’ve observed is that many of the self reliant, self prepared, or heavily armed and trained in our midst tend to be loners.

Finding them will be dangerous once the SHTF, because at that point they will rather shoot you where you stand in order to protect themselves, than to get to know you and see if you prove a reliable ally or a drain on their resources or outright threat.

That said I love you all and when the SHTF, I will at least ask the question, possibly at gun point, “what is a Freeper?”

If you can’t answer that question, it’s strike one.

Frogs, slowly boiled, never take to the streets.

Adaptation shows us that some frogs will be resistant to the higher temperatures and will hop out of the pot. I think of these frogs as the saviors of the Republic. You will find many of them within the confines of this forum.

It may be our only hope.

We had two major outages here in Conn recently—Irene (Sep of 2011) and a freak Oct snowstorm (also in 2011). Many places were without power for 8-10 days each, within a month’s time.

My town was out 8 days with Irene. We never lost power for the snowstorm. Our gas stations were *mobbed* because we were the most northern town in eastern Conn with power. Twitter, Facebook, emails, phone calls, whatever. We had people from all over the state getting gas at our local stations.

It never got out of hand like you describe, but it was eye-opening.

I like mine, but I do wish I’d bought a larger unit. Just couldn’t afford it.

Pros? It does the job powering our entire house except for the central air. It will run our furnace, which is nice. I added a Tri-fuel kit so it runs on propane or NG if I need it to. That’s what I’d recommend as either is much cheaper than gasoline.

Cons? It’s loud. So I’m building a small shed for it and adding a muffler. I have the GP 5500 and installed a 6 position transfer switch kit so all I have to do is plug in the 220 inlet to the house. It works well.
