I have always been taught that Jean Jacques Rousseau is the father of that pernicious doctrine of subjective ism that currently pervades the West. The doctrine passed from him to Marx to us. Subjective ism in religion, environmentalism, excessive pity for criminals, the Third World, and vice addicts, etc.etc.

I have noticed an unreasonable fascination with Rousseau among the current crop of "progressives" sprouting out from Canada and the U.K.
Idealists with a twisted view of humanity and its place in the overall spectrum of things.
