Back in college I worked at the Borders in Thousand Oaks. I shelved books at 4 a.m. While working there, politics and religion came up a lot, and I was the sole defender of two ideologies: Christianity and conservatism. One of the most interesting conversations I ever had was with a fellow college student named Bob. Bob and I enjoyed talking about all the great issues of life. One day he looked at me and said something Ill never forget. Paul, he said, you wanna know the difference between Republicans and Democrats? Ill tell ya. Everyones a Democrat until some jerk with a gun comes and robs them. Then they realize what the world is really like. He paused and said, I hope no one ever does that to me.
Of course Bob never wanted to be robbed, nor did I want Bob to be robbed, but Bob was more afraid that a hard jolt of reality would steal much more than his wallet; Bob was afraid it would steal his liberal mindset.
Recently, one of Americas biggest liberals, Bill Maher, has become a defender of the two faiths. This, of course, is extremely ironic when one looks back on Mahers recent career. He gave $1 million to the Obama campaign; his 2008 anti-religion film, Religulous, mocked all types of faith; hes spoken out cruelly against Sarah Palin (beyond most); and his HBO roundtable show, Real Time with Bill Maher, is a bully pulpit that usually pits three liberals (Maher and two guests) against a moderate Republican.....

Pretty good apart from the conflating of party labels with ideology.
I was born conservative, now I’m just pissed off.
Let's hope Maher is waking up but I won't hold my breath.
I was a liberal and after becoming a Christian at 26, became a conservative. The bible really does help you make sense of your life and shows you how to be happy, healthy and at peace. Even when you have to deal with the left, you know that what is right will win in the end.
I have to agree with the general idea...I was always pretty conservative (although very apolitical) until I became self-employed. That opens your eyes to the gluttony and waste in our tax system. And yes, growing closer to God made me aware on a socially conservative level.
The fact that life makes one conservative is why liberals are growing government so fast and extending its tentacles into every facet of life. If government provides your needs and thinks for you, the “becoming conservative” thing — independence, initiative, economical thinking — gets derailed.
I grew up in a fairly isolated farm community were liberalism simply didn’t enter into the equation much. I grew up poor and thinking that someone should give me what I want would have brought down the wrath of my whole family.
I agree with you....once you MATURE you become Conservative....I know some people in their 60’s/70’s who have YET to mature!
Combining what you and American in Israel wrote, one notes: The purpose of gubmint’s getting into the cradle-to-grave caregiving business is to keep people from growing up. We’re becoming a nation of infants as us old farts die off, and that redounds to the benefit of the far-leftists.
Ha! That summed it up perfectly.
Exactly. You know where you stand as a child of the King.
We were poor when I was little, but my parents both worked hard and God blessed us. Then we were blessed even more with God’s truth and became Christians.
quote often attributed to Churchill (not sure if it is true)
“If you are not a liberal when you are 20 you have no heart. If you are not a conservative when you are 40 you have no brain”
I was 19 when LBJ was elected. That’s when I discovered I was a conservative.
you monster you!
