I don't believe it either.

it was making its way from Singapore to Jeddah.

This article says "the 316-m-long vessel was carrying 4,500 containers from Saudi Arabia".

Saudi Arabia is about 6,700 miles from Singapore.

The iron content in the water here in Texas is pretty high. Now I know why. Texans are clumsy when it comes to guns in boats.

Wow, I need to check to see if pigs are buzzing around outside. Who could have predicted a 20+ year US military veteran would be cheering a Russian sub for torpedoing a cargo ship of US supplied weapons?

Way to go Vlad!

Mitsui O.S.K. Lines, Ltd. : Update (No.7): Incident Involving the Containership MOL Comfort

06/22/2013| 09:50pm US/Eastern

TOKYO- Mitsui O.S.K. Lines, Ltd. (MOL; President: Koichi Muto) updates the status of the containership MOL Comfort as of 23:00 JST (18:00 Dubai time) on June 22 , 2013. The vessel could not continue sailing under its own power from June 17 because the hull fractured in 2 parts while under way on the Indian Ocean.

1. Vessel

The fore and aft parts are drifting near 14"52N 65'46"E and 13'29"N 63'27"E respectively in an east-northeast direction. The weather at the site is still adverse. The patrol boat which we have arranged is expected to arrive at the ocean site around June 24.

2. Containers (No change from the Update (No.6))

Some of the containers might be lost or damaged during the incident, but majority of the cargo are confirmed to be aboard the fore and aft part.

3. Rescue of the cargo and hulls

We have contracted with a salvage company and are proceeding to rescue the cargo and hulls. Three tugboats are heading to the site, and two of them are expected to arrive around June 24 while the 3rd one is around June 25.

4. Oil leakage (No change from the Update (No.6))

We confirmed no large volume of oil leakage.

This has been debunked on a number of shipping/naval forums. Here's the crux:

It wasn't heading to the Middle East. It was heading TO Singapore, FROM the Middle East (reference here

The ship didn't sink. It split in half from the keel up, but both pieces retained water-tight integrity and salvage operations are underway.

The ship was apparently built with a new type of high-strength steel. Speculation is that the steel was especially rigid for an aircraft-carrier sized vessel with a relatively high center of gravity but still built to commercial and not military standards (especially when it comes to compartmentalization). The ship hit heavy weather and wasn't able to flex properly given the waves it was encountering, so the hull failed (thankfully along a bulkhead)

Next shipment, let’s include the 1.6 billion rounds of hollow point ammo the Feds bought. It was for the WOT, so I’m sure it was to be used against Muslims.

My first thought, too. What evidence is there that it was carrying arms. how did it get there so soon, what was it doing in the Indian Ocean. Some ship broke up and sank, at some time, that’s all we know for sure.

I wish this were true, but I suspect it’s not. Hard to imagine we would be shipping arms from Mumbai, and that we would allow a ship loaded with weapons to be unescorted (or allow anyone to get close enough to take pictures like these).

The fact that a ship that large split in two on the high seas would have been interesting enough. No need for the fabrication of a story.

Yes, MOL has built some beasts. So is China Shipping, Cosco Shipping, and Maersk. They are getting into the 16.5K TEU range, and 1,100 feet in length. They now have to get wider and deeper because much more than that length and the wave period would require much stronger scantlings to cope with the stresses.

It’s sort of interesting how you often get two different threads out of one thread.

There’s one smaller thread in this of people who have some idea of what they’re talking about, are providing actual information of value, who have done a bit of research on their own about the incident.

Then there is a larger thread of ranting idiots who just read the headline of the thread and keep posting feeble attempts at humor, blissfully oblivious to all the posts of the people on the “other” thread within this thread.

You think that won’t happen regardless of what we do or don’t do? Very naive of you if you do. No, when your enemies are fighting amongst themselves, it is most desirable to keep them doing that for as long as possible. We can manage the fallout later.
