Pet Rescue. Adopt a Cat in New York
Human Health and Animal Ethics ^ | Enza Ferreri

The Problem

Jack the Cat in Manhattan CenterThere are people sentenced to capital punishment, awaiting their fate on death row, who have not committed any crime, not been accused of anything, not stood any trial, not been found guilty by judge or jury.

If these people, biologically, were members of the human species, the outrage at this earth-shattering injustice would reach the sky and beyond, leaping into the stratosphere.

But because the biological status of these persons, who feel and think like you and me, or at least like you and me when we were little children, happens to be a different one from Homo Sapiens, it is considered ethically acceptable to kill them when they are perfectly healthy and young, only because nobody wants them and very few people care about them.

They live in shelters until the moment of their killing arrives, in cages, scared and sad because they are social animals who need affection.

One of them was Jack, the male ginger cat pictured here, who was only 2 years old when he arrived at the Manhattan Animal Care Center in New York, "surrendered" by his owner who gave as the reason a hoarding problem.

Jack was physically in good health, but read his behavior evaluation by the cat shelter: "No change Posture: Tense Greeting: Remains neutral (0) Cage Opens: Remains motionless (0) Extend Hand: Remains motionless (0) Stroke: Retreats (-1) Total Score: 0."

Jack was so depressed at the shelter that he couldn't even lift his head for a photo. He was alone, afraid, sad, another countless victim of a hoarding situation.

Miraculously, given his past living conditions, Jack was only shy with humans, but the cat shelter did not have much hope for his rehoming just because of his introverted personality: that hardly deserves a death sentence.

Yet he was put on the shelter's "To Be Destroyed" list.

We don't know what happened to Jack since.

Pet Rescue: Who Helps

Pets Killed at a Shelter and Placed in Bins like Rubbish Awaiting the Incinerator

There are groups of volunteers who do what they can.

Pets on Death Row (PODR) is a network of volunteers involved in pet rescue, working to save the lives of cats and kittens housed in the shelters of the Animal Care & Control of New York City (NYC AC&C).

NYC AC&C is a not-for-profit organization responsible for the city's municipal shelter system, with facilities operating in all the five boroughs of New York.

If no home is found for the cats in the shelters they are killed. PODR, which is not affiliated with NYC ACC, tries to save them every day, with only hours to spare from the time the cats are listed to the moment they are killed.

Pets on Death Row Facebook page publishes a daily list, with photos and descriptions, of cats and kittens that are due to be "euthanized" the next day, to find someone who wishes to adopt them.

Adopting a cat in these circumstances is no more and no less than saving a life.

The work of Pets on Death Row is vital and requires a lot of time and effort.

Please help them in any way you can.

Another worthy pet rescue group is All Sentient Beings, member of the Mayor's Alliance for NYC's Animals. They rescue cats condemned to die from New York shelters and keep them for adoption by members of the public.

The widget on the top left of this page is to send them donations. Click on the ChipIn! button.

If you live in the New York area please get in touch with these groups, also through their ChipIn site and All Sentient Beings Facebook Page.

New York Mayor Bloomberg has been involved in this pet rescue issue, agreeing to contribute to free pet spaying services during economic hard times.

A good idea would be to develop a pet rescue project by which the many jobless people who receive unemployment benefits, and whose number has recently increased due to the current economic situation, helped looking after these creatures. It would be good for the unemployed too, by offering them all the emotional benefits that having a pet brings, giving them a sense of purpose, a sense of doing something useful and of giving something back to the community that supports them.

Inside Pet Shelters

Pet ShelterAccording to the Humane Society of the United States estimates, no less than 6-8 million cats and dogs are taken by animal shelters in the United States alone every year, and of these animals about as many as 3-4 million are "euthanized" in shelters only because there are no homes for them, so due entirely to lack of space, food and carers.

Throughout this article I've used the word "euthanized" in inverted commas because this is not euthanasia at all.

"Euthanasia" derives from the Greek and literally translated it means "good death". It applies to situations when death is, or is considered to be, a better choice than life only for the individual concerned, not for anybody else.

When animals who have all the physical conditions to live a good, healthy life are put to death only because there is no will to devote enough resources to their continued existence, then the choice of death is obviously not the better one for the animal.

Interestingly, according to a recent poll in the States, "7 in 10 pet owners say they believe animal shelters should be allowed to euthanize animals only when they are too sick to be treated or too aggressive to be adopted" and only 1 in 4 participants "said animal shelters should sometimes be allowed to put animals down as a population control measure."

This tragedy is obviously not limited to the USA.

One thing that all of us can do, and it's a very easy thing, is to always adopt animals from pet shelters rather than buying them from pet shops or breeders.

Cats huh?

They crap in your flowerbeds, walk all over your car, spray your car tires with piss, meow all night outside of your bedroom window, kill your songbirds, carry horrible diseases, only want around you when they want something and many times scratch and bite you for no apparent reason even while you are petting them, come on your fenced property any time they wish and best of all, have absolutely filthy and stinky litter boxes in the house.

When you adopt a cat you bring it home so that the neighbors can enjoy the pest that it is too.

If you want a loyal loving pet...get a dog.

Every kitty I’ve been blessed with (2) has been like Jack, considered unadoptable.

My heart breaks for Jack and all the other Kittehs who need homes. I wish I was allowed a second kitty. .

I'm with you. As for the stinky litter boxes, that's not the cat's fault. That's the fault of a lazy owner who doesn't clean the litter box. Do you think that the cat who has to use that filthy box likes it? They have a delicate sense of smell and will often refuse to use a dirty box. Who wants to step on poop?

As for the other "horrible" behaviors other posters here attributed to cats, every one of them originated in a lousy irresponsible owner. Cats kept inside do not relieve themselves in neighbors' yards, chase birds, etc. Cats who are spayed/neutered do not contribute to the heartbreaking pet overpopulation problem. As for "Jack", that beautiful ginger tabby, you can bet the bank he ended up in a garbage can, his bright inquisitive eyes glazed over in death. The NYC Animal "Care" and Control is nothing but a pet slaughterhouse. Many animals brought in there don't even make it to the adoption floor. The various locations are filthy and animals brought in there almost invariably catch respiratory diseases, giving the staff a great excuse to put them on the next day's kill list. That includes tiny baby kittens still nursing, along with their mom.

That's a BIT of a leap though. People owe it to God to be as kind as practical to animals, and if they must kill animals to do it as humanely as possible, but animals are simply not fur persons. They have their own characteristics. Cats do some things better than humans do, and that's fine because God gave those capabilities to cats.

I adopted from shelters in NJ but I heard wonderful things about Northshore.

Both my kitties were abused and given away when they got pregnant, Both have quirks that made them unadoptable. I don’t know if they were born that way or developed them at the shelter.

The cat I have now will only eat if a human watches her. She is afraid another kitty will steal her food. I’ve had her for over 10 years and I cannot breaks her of this habit.

I've never heard of cats running in packs, terrorizing adults, children, and other animals, including other dogs. Neither have I heard any stories of pit bullcats killing people. Cats may use flowerbeds for bathrooms, but I've never been much of a flower person. Would it be better to do it out in the open like a dog? I believe in keeping cats inside, but still, I don't see how a cat running loose would be any more of a pest than a typical howling dog.

I grew up liking cats AND dogs, but over time I'm getting to be more of a cat only person. I don't understand why so many dog lovers feel the need to run down cats. Whats wrong with liking, or at least tolerating both?

Cats. Amusing, affectionate, intelligent, trainable, cuddly, sensitive to your feelings, beautiful, elegant, independent, clean, dear little pets.

Well... no, sorry.

I have had animals since I was born. They do not think like you and me, not even when we were little children.

I am not in favor of discarding pets as if they were tissue but they also are not people.

having empathy for animals and owners goes beyond just the pet you like.

i have exotics but i can empathize with dog and cat owners because the feelings you feel for a pet you take care of, keep healthy and happy, are the same no matter what the species.

Very depressing. I think I need a shot of Jim Beam right about now. B-( I know of one lady that goes around the Eastern Seaboard from here in Pittsburgh to Georgia saving many cats and kittens under similar threats. Myself, I only have two cats now, one time I had as many as nine. We took in a kitten who was saved from a similar fate from a shelter in Preston County, West Virgina, Rascal, he just turned six. The other one is around 13, we took her and her three kittens in back in 2001. Unfortunately, all the kittens have passed away, one kitten (Greystone) in 2006, he was only 5 from kidney failure and his sister (Whitey) had the same last year at the age of 11 and the other brother (G.W. aka "Dubya") passed from cancer in 2011 at the age of 10. So we only have Mom left from the family. BTW, I always got a kick out of Whitey, everytime the Obummer came on the TV, she swatted him, Whitey even hissed at him from time to time.

BTW, I'm more of a cat person but my heart goes out to dogs and puppies too as well as others. I look at it this way, all these pets are loving animals that have a place or should have a place.

Eek!

Sorry, I am sure he (she?) is a perfectly nice snake but I lived in the tropics to long to be fond of them.

I like animals in different ways, some I like to have live with me, some I like to admire from a respectful distance, some I like on a plate and some I like very far away from me.
