Posted on 08/02/2013 10:03:28 PM PDT by John Semmens
Russias decision to grant a temporary one-year asylum to NSA whistle blower Edward Snowden was described as unfortunate and extremely disappointing by Presidential Press Secretary Jay Carney.
Carney contrasted Russias uncooperative stance with FDRs extraordinarily accommodating attitude toward the repatriation of millions of unwilling refugees from the Soviet Union after World War II. FDR knew that these refugees didnt want to go back. Many faced torture, imprisonment in the Gulag, and execution. He could have balked for humanitarian reasons. But his personal sense of obligation to Stalin overrode his qualms.
Now with the roles reversed, Stalins heirs wont even return one man to us, Carney complained. Wheres their sense of honor? We tried to make it easy on them by promising not to torture or kill Snowden. Its as if they dont trust us. Its a slap in the face to the whole reset button strategy initiated by this Administration.
Gaining permission to remain in Russia is considered a major setback for the Obama Administrations efforts to settle accounts with Snowden. It is one of the few places where the Administration would likely be reluctant to exercise its option to order him taken out via a drone strike. However, Snowdens possible removal via covert extraction or assassination is an option that cannot be ruled out.
if you missed any of this week's other semi-news/semi-satire posts you can find them at...
If we had a real president, Snowden would be back in our hands by now. However ...
Obama has become Putin’s fly on the window sill .... Putin has just begun pulling off his wings.
I wonder if we’re going to reset the reset button?
Funny, but even funnier is how transparent Obama is whenever his dander is up. Just like with Palin, he proclaims Snowden isn’t worth getting excited about - “relatively insignificant” is I think how he described it. Yet at the same time, his people are out talking about how damaging Snowden is, whining like Carney here about how mean Putin is for not returning him, making threats....
They get all wee-wee’d up over things they say aren’t very important (like the Tea Party, and a former Governor of Alaska)...
Obama Administration irks sane Americans.
Agreed...but as said....However...
Satire. Calm down.
What happens after a year?
i wish putin was speaker
why does boehner have such small balls??
Wonder What Snowden knows of Benghazi??????????
Too much alcohol.
Not bad, but it was on Truman’s watch, not FDRs, although Roosevelt’s minions were still running the show.
It was FDR at Yalta who agreed to forcibly repatriate these refugees.
But Truman who delivered them.
I don’t know this is what would happen..but I read that a lot of countries that Snowden applied for asylum said he had to be in their embassy before granted.
Maybe he will eventually try to get to one.
Just my conjecture...but hasn’t that Assausge guy been in an embassy for a couple of years. Probably more comfy, and protected than the airport.
“If we had a real president, Snowden would be back in our hands by now”
If we had a real President, Snowden wouldn’t have had to inform the American people of his treasonous ignoring of the 4th Amendment and his creation of an internal Stasi.
Good. Let them feel what they generate in the population.
Now they are forced to use the History Eraser Button!!!
Nothing at all, unless Snowden wants to leave and is able to. He is one of most geniune asylum seekers. I think Snowden gets a job in Russia, marries, and after that why should he go anywhere? Any first world country will extradite him; he would be abducted from any 2nd and 3rd world country, even if he is willing to live in [squalor of] Venezuela. A well educated man with high IQ and talent for languages will have no problem finding a job in Russia, especially when there is political will to offer such a job to him.
If you say that he became a pawn... yes, he is a pawn now, moved here and there by high ranked players. What did he expect? Approval of his asylum application does not change that at all. He still could be abducted by the USA, or by affiliated groups, or even personally by Putin. The game goes on, and this pawn is still useful. He should be well aware of that.
Snowden is obviously ill, and must therefore be returned to the United States to receive state-mandated medical treatment administered by his Obamacare death panel.
Vlad Putin obviously not the White Guilt Liberal the Obama Admin is used to dealing with...
Just a thought......how many Russian spies have defected to the U.S. and we refuse to send back?
I hope it irks the hell out of them.
Slim chance to none but real president would downplay this comedy and send real diplomats to solve a problem.
Why don’t I ever read the byline FIRST??? Tho, it does make it more fun to get roped in, THEN realize it’s Semmens Semi=Semi.
Someone should suggest that the Just Us Department should file civil rights charges against Snowden. He’s obviously a racist because he has embarrassed O’Bama.
Well, we're certainly overcharging things with them [that's what the Russian word actually meant]...
This adminstration irks me every freaking day, big damn deal!
If we had a real president, there wouldn’t have been any problems for Snowden to reveal in the first place.
Haven’t posted in a while. Wanted to come on and say that an obama boot licker called me an idiot not long ago when I said the government is using FB to spy on citizens. I wonder if he has read about the NSA. Probably has but still denies it. Talk about an idiot!
