Just saw it mid day saturday. theatre was pretty crowded but not packed.
i kind of liked it. damon was good as low level criminal that gets into a big big mess. Jodie Foster was really good as the evil b*&%h that runs the space station habitat. For reasons never explained she speaks French, and has some odd kind of French accent. Aside from that she fills the roll. She also fills out her tight skirt, looks like Ms. Foster has ballooned a little. Might have gone another way on the rear tight skirt shots. Double wide.
Lot of stuff ripped off from other Sci Fi, like Larry Nivens Ringworld, and all the exoskeleton and mean robot stuff from a zillion other films. Plus a major rip off from Johnny Mnemonic about loading big data into the brain. Kind of a rip of Iron Man too in a way, but it still hangs together.
Ending isnt too surprising, i wont give it away.
The guy who starred in District 9 plays the bad guy and he is really good. Lot of cool miltech scenes and hardware. Fight scenes, but not too many.
Special effects and visuals were outstanding.
All in all, if you are a sci fi fan, a must see. But then I liked Oblivion, so there you go.
Oh, and the "political agenda"? Thats BS, there isnt any, its strictly the usual down and outs against the haves, no big deal, no more than Les Miserables or any other film like that. No biggie, not in your freeper face thats for sure, IMHO.
waiting for it to come out on dvd
Damon is a liberal, he doesn’t need any of my money.
waiting for it to come out on bittorrent
I'll stick with THE DAY THE EARTH STOOD STILL, although that was agitprop too. Whaddaya gonna do?
Are the illegal aliens not working in the future, too?
“waiting for it to come out on dvd.”
I’m waiting for it to come out too, so I can ignore it AGAIN.
Feels good to ignore Maaaaaaatt Daaaaaaamon.

Is there a good guy?
Sorry, I don’t waste my money supporting Marxists.
yeah, but i hate that liberal puke Damon and Foster said there is a political message. Not for me but it’s your money. Maybe I’ll give it a shot if it’s uploaded on torrent..
damon is the sort of good guy, but the tech guy who runes the raid on the space station is also a good guy.
Yeah and you just gave $10 apiece (more if you bought concessions) to the Hillary for President campaign fund, and to every liberal politician’s campaign.
believe me, there isnt any poltical message, its just a sci fi movie.
unless you think star wars was political.
I would say no, but i can see some of the true hard asses on this thread might think so.
I will go see it, but just went to see Two Guns today with the family and it was EXCELLENT. Next week is Jobs and The Butler and perhaps this one you went to. Not sure yet. Depending on family obligations and events.
I saw it too. Basically it is a ripoff of a single Star Trek episode from 1969, with other complexities added into it.
I would say no, but i can see some of the true hard asses on this thread might think so.
I hate the movie threads. The high and mighty come out and say they won’t see the movie, but I bet most will sneak and see it and just tell us they won’t. How else did it make 11 million on Friday a lone. Trust me FREEPERS are seeing it too.
Technically cool, but yeah, the basic message was, “Open the borders to ALL comers, and give them free health care...”
Elysium is the USA, the place all the earthlings yearn to g, but can’t, and poor Earth is Mexico.
It’s very, very clear.
Does it surprise you that this comes right as all the amnesty stuff is being set up...?
If my GF says yes to watch it, i’ll give it a shot but she’s paying. BTW, I respect your opinion as I always appreciate different perspectives coming from Freepers. Thanks for the honest review, bro.
There's always Torrents.
I saw it, but lied and told the cashier lady I intended to see some kiddy movie.
I do that every time as a weird form of activism.
You just helped Damon put his kids through another year of private schools while yours probably went to government schools...
Feeling good about that?
you are the only one....
hahahahaha
“The guy who starred in District 9 plays the bad guy and he is really good”
Thanks for your review, I loved that movie District 9 and flame me if you like but hubby and I really like Matt Damon, as an actor, esp. in the Bourne movies.
So I might go see this one in the movies. It did look good from the ads.
Actually say Les Miz with the kid and that was OK, but Russel Crowe, a good as he was, really didn’t have the singing chops and his one big number suffered for that.
my kids both went to private colleges, one went to public high school one went to parochial high school.
do i feel good about it? you bet your ass i do.
one of the things i am most proud of in my life.
i dont give a rats ass where damon sends his kid. thats his business. free country bro.
to me, funding the leftist agenda isn't entertainment...
“Oh, and the “political agenda”? Thats BS, there isnt any”
Oh yes there is, that’s why they went to great pains to say “it’s entertainment”
Agenda #1: “Citizenship is only a database entry”
Agenda #2: “Free Medical Care is easy”
Agenda #3: “The gringos don’t want mexicans to have the free medical care”
They filmed this a year ago probably.....they had no idea that Obamacare and Amnesty would be at a political crescendo at the point when the film came out - hence the BS about it being entertainment only.
Why would you support such crap?
I hope you are talking about the original TDTESS.
The only problem with the Film was that the Aliens could shut down Electrical Generation worldwide, making exceptions for Planes in flight, Hospitals etc., but they threaten to destroy the entire Planet if we weaponize Space.
Well, without Electricity, there ain’t no Rockets going anywhere. The Human Race would just be in a perpetual early 1800’s state for eternity.
One of my favorite trivia items about the Film was the question of the Robot Gort. When they asked the designer how he came up with a Costume that had no visible openings for the Actor to get into it, he had a very simple answer.
There were TWO Suits, one with a zipper in the front and the other with a zipper in the back.
Well of course the premise is not at all original
Best film I have seen in a long time with a political message hat worked was Book of Eli.
Personally, I’m not a Matt Damon fan, but since there is still a smidgeon of freedom left in this country, you are free to watch anything you like and support them as well.
I used to think well, I won’t support so and so in their career because I don’t agree with their politics, and to a certain extent, I still hold to that. Then I got to thinking - those libs pay taxes as well, they eat out, they buy clothes and cars, etc., so they are keeping others in jobs as well - and some of those others may very well be conservatives. This is just my opinion in the matter.
Maybe Damon and Foster would feel differently if they saw Elysium as Beverly Hills and Hollywood while Earth is the rest of Los Angeles. Hey poor people, just walk a few miles north and everything will be free and wonderful... Ha! Damon would be begging for the riot police to set up a free fire zone to keep Beverly Hills safe.
Just to clarify things, which FReepers do you consider among the “high and mighty”?
Do you have an official list?
Am I on it?
My best guess is that Elysium gets destroyed, but only after Damon’s character gets what he needs from it, and them the world ends up the same except those Evil Rich Republicans who lived on Elysium are DEAD!
A liberal feel good (but they don’t know why) Wet Dream. Kind of like Obamacare.
Or, I could be wrong. I have a free Movie Pass I got on my Birthday. There is no extra charge if you wait a week to see New Releases, so I might go see it next week to check if my theory holds water.
I wouldn’t care if it was the epic of the new millennium, I won’t give them my money.
Hope you mean the 1951 TDTESS with Michael Rennie instead of Kenau Reeves. :) Much better.
The Butler? Seriously? Hanoi Jane Fonda playing Nancy Reagan? Oprah on general principle?
Never Forget, Never Forgive Hanoi Jane.
He might have a back end deal as well, but I'm not sure any FReeper participation will amount to much extra money for him or the hundreds of Liberals who helped make the Movie.
If it's an issue, wait until the DVD makes the bargain bin at Walmart in about a year. Even then a Liberal will get paid though, even if it's just a penny.
I saw an ad for this on TV. Just a lot of mechanical stuff happening, muscles flexing, absolutely zero dialogue. Not my kind of flick.
Some day I will see it in the library collection of DVDs.
You know, the old staple of “haves and have-nots” has become so common place in sci-fi films, it’s not even considered political anymore, no wonder Damon thought it wasn’t political.
At any rate, I’ll still wait till video. If it’s low on action (which I heard it is), I’m in rush to see it. Damon is a big negative for me. I waited many years for the Bourne Trilogy to get to video, I can wait for this.
The original still had the coolest Robot and the coolest Spaceship IMHO.
I loved the scene with all the Doctors at Walter Reed talking about the miracle healing “salve” that Klatu gave them while they were sitting there smoking unfiltered Cigarettes.
They ripped off Ringworld? Bummer.
They still make DVD’s?
Cuba Gooding Jr is in it. He was great in Men of Honor and Jerry Maguire. I heard that Jane is in it for about 10 minutes. The movie is about an African American Butler that served 10 Administrations. It is going to be a great movie. Most likely sweep the Oscars next year. It is a true story.
Your library is full of free DVDs and gets new ones all the time.
Some public libraries are starting to stream movies online, also.
The Cloud Minders
Fer sure. Heh, I read your note and thought, "Keanu Reeves? Never heard of it!" Then I looked it up and realized I saw it! I guess you could call that "forgettable".
