In recent years if you were an illegal immigrant in L.A., and there are many of you, you faced losing your car for at least 30 days if you were stopped by the LAPD.
Under the urging of then-Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa, the department last year changed that policy and said you could pretty much keep your car if you hadn't done anything else wrong. The policy, called Special Order 7, was challenged by the police union and a citizen, and today a local judge ruled against the LAPD:
L.A. Superior Court Judge Terry Green said that the LAPD's policy was inconsistent with state law on the matter, which allows officers to enforce the 30-day impounds.
The question appears to be whether the department can direct its cops about how and when to use state rules in such a matter.
The ACLU, which is defending the city's position in court, says the department can indeed establish guidelines for officers to use on the street: Plaintiffs say the policy ties the hands of cops when it comes to enforcing California law -- they must impound.
(Interestingly, the City Attorney's office, which is tasked with defending the policy, had no comment today, a spokesman told the Weekly).
Of course, impounding cars in L.A. had become a racket.
Immigrants' advocates have argued that, especially in this town, nabbing illegals' cars for 30 days was a cash cow: In many cases the immigrants wouldn't have the wherewithal to pay the $1,000-plus in fines and storage to get their cars out of the yards and essentially had to give them up to be sold.
The undocumented, an integral part of our society, from dish washers to nannies, auto mechanics to cooks, can't get drivers licenses in California, period.

Maybe we should give the car to the arresting officers to sell for money to be placed in private retirement funds.
They are not integral.
We have 22%+ unemployment in the real world. There are people who don’t get any welfare anymore, some who aren’t criminals would want to work, and if that means starting low, some would. A low supply of low end workers might bump up the salary levels a bit to get people to work. Or get some teens working a job for money for school and/or spending on things.
Yeah I am so 1980s but hey, it worked.
“In recent years if you were an illegal immigrant in L.A., and there are many of you, you faced losing your car for at least 30 days if you were stopped by the LAPD.”
Really?
I think you should face getting the f-— out this country if you are stopped by the LAPD!
They always do that.
You can do nothing! You must submit to our invasion!
Spanish culture is always relentless.
Mexican illegal aliens as the Borg
Maybe if they enforced that policy the same way against any race, or class of people there would be no bitching. Why do you feel that if the police enforce a law they are padding their pockets? It’s the lawmakers that determine where that money goes, bitch at them. I’m tired of this protected class skating, three time I have been hit by “undocumented immigrants” driving their “undocumented vehicles” and we all pay with higher insurance rates. They skate the law by buying one weeks or one months insurance to register their vehicle and that’s it until the next time it needs to be registered. Lear to live with Baretta’s motto “Don’t do the crime if you can’t do the time”.
Why should illegals keep getting better treatment than citizens?
Time to invest in impound lots in Los Angeles... It’s a growth industry.
You are correct. My grandfather, a clergyman in L.A., was killed on his way to give religious instruction by an uninsured driver, driving drunk. He had just relocated there, bought a house. His new posting had only just begun. My grandmother and adolescent uncle were decimated.
No licenses for illegals.
My only concern is that the DMV has given too many licenses to many fools here in L.A. who cant even drive. Now what kind of DMV provides the written test in 75 idiotic languages?
Sorry, I rushed on down to the cleaners to get my tiny violin out so I could play its one string for that earlier sob story err horrible story about a poor unfortunate woman, and they werent finished cleaning it yet...
They said it was so yucky with the snotty sobs and heartrendering tales of eons of illegal alien families that they had to steam clean and fumigate it and it would cost me an extra ObamaCare month of big bucks...
Gotta get me some Obama money so I can get my tiny violin back and then I can play you a tune worth of your pain and sorrow..
Got any spare Pesos, Hombre ???
IF we had a system that really worked you couldn’t get a license plate without proof of insurance for the period of the plate.
The illegals already have multiple faked/forged ID's, and drivers' licenses under different names....which also allows them to vote under different names....and collect a raft of US freebies under different names.
1. legalization forces them to get drivers' licenses under their real names.
2. state computers run a photo-match check to see if the same person has applied under different names.
3. they get investigated for ID theft and have to answer to a judge.
4. they get prosecuted under US law.
