(CNSNews.com) - Sen. Tom Harkin (D-Iowa), a federal lawmaker, said he separates illegal aliens from criminals even though its obvious that they broke the laws and did things that were criminal and they shouldnt.
At an Aug. 2 immigration forum in Ames, Iowa, Harkin explained his reasoning.
I separate out people who came here illegally from people who are criminals," he said. "Now its obvious that they broke laws and did things that were criminal and they shouldnt."
But Im just saying simply because they came here to work to provide for their family. Theyve broken no laws other than coming here illegally, Harkin continued. Theyre here illegally thats true. And they need to go through all the hoops we put in the bill. But I just dont classify them as criminals.
Harkin attended the event along with Sen. Dick Durbin (D-Ill.) to promote the Senate immigration bill. Durbin is the one of the Gang of Eight senators who wrote the current Senate immigration reform measure

I classify most Congressional ‘Rats as traitors (a state beyond criminal).
Tom Harkin lied about his military service during the Vietnam war. Does that make him a liar; or just a teller on non truths?
Using that logic everyone should be able to find where the congress critters live and setup a lemonaide stand ON their front lawn and just say they are trespassing to “earn a living”, like that would ever F*&^*&! fly....
I’d just like to say that the Eastern part of Iowa (most populated) is a Liberal Hellhole.
But I bet he classifies people who choose not to pay taxes as criminals....
Illegally entering the country. Illegally stealing social security numbers. Illegally gaining employment. Illegally doing all kinds of things kinda makes a person a criminal.
What did he lie about in his military service during the Vietnam war ?
It’s pretty bad when your very first act on this soil is to break the law. But they know there is no political will in this country to stop this invasion. This is not compassion; it is weakness.
I am with Harkin on this one. I think about the 3 American hikers who got lost and went across the Iranian border and got put in jail for weeks. It is absurd.
Simply crossing a border should not be a major crime.
Now driving without a license, insurance, or enrolling in school or living here or collecting welfare when not a citizen. Ok that is bad.
I do have trouble with deeming crossing a border a crime.
Isn’t that special.
He said he flew in combat during a presidential campaign.
The reality is that he ferried aircraft back and forth to Vietnam; not in combat.
“While running for his Senate seat, and again while running for the Democratic presidential nomination in 1992, Harkin made statements about his military record that implied he had flown combat missions over North Vietnam. After inquiries by Barry Goldwater and The Wall Street Journal, Harkin clarified that he had flown combat air patrols and reconnaissance missions over Cuba, and had flown aircraft into and out of Vietnam, but had never flown missions in Vietnam and had never engaged enemy aircraft in combat.”

What about the ones filling up our prisons Senator? Do you classify them as criminals, or do you simply ignore it?
When I went to the Canadian Boundary Waters Canoe area decades ago, the "outfitter" towed us and stopped at an island where the Canadian Border guards hung out. We got our approval and permits and then were off to the first portage.
It's not too hard to comply with National Borders and the laws of visitation. Learn to read a map and now with GPS devices to know where you are.
My heart bleeds for you (in your stupidity).
“I do have trouble with deeming crossing a border a crime.”
Oh come on; your example of the hikers who accidentally crossed a unmarked border; with illegals coming here for economic reasons is totally wrong.
Give me one country where it is not a crime to enter it illegally? Do you think borders are just lines drawn on a map?
You know, a german kid flew an ultra light into the middle of red square. he got put in jail for 4 years. A few russian air defense officials possibly also got sent to Siberia, but I can not confirm that.
I think I will repeat. Crossing a border does not seem to be a crime to me. Now what you do on the other side may be criminal.
Idiots all.
wasnt this guy a boy friend of Jane Fonda ???
He didnt think he and Janie were criminals back then either
I separate out people who came here illegally from people who are criminals
Rule of law? What rule of law?
Don’t they take an oath swearing to uphold the laws of this country!?
GAH!
It’s called a border for a reason.
He wanted to run for Congress, and did, and got elected.
First Comrade from Iowa in a long time.
He loved and protected the communist Sandinistas of Nicaragua as well as the VC.
And the fools kept electing him.
That’s funny. Mexico considers people who do that to be criminals.

“I do have trouble with deeming crossing a border a crime.”
So the borders are just marks on a map for geography class?? The difference between these illegals and the hikers is the hikers never intended to flout Iranian national law. These illegals didn’t end up here by unfortunate happenstance. They came here, violated American law (weak and unenforced as it is) and stay. Therein lies the difference.
Lots of people commit crimes for financial reasons and they have children too. I can use this democrat’s logic to argue they not be punished or considered criminals.
How many laws are they allowed to break, Mr Harkin, before they become “criminals” in your eyes? How many laws are US citizens allowed too, for that matter?
Identity theft is only a crime if you are a US citizen.
*stayed
Then we should be able to “just not classify him as a Senator”, and then his vote shouldn’t count.
You may be thinking of the other communist, Tom Hayden.
Life would be easier (better) if Pi = 3.00000_
Good Luck.
“Crossing a border does not seem to be a crime to me. Now what you do on the other side may be criminal.”
How about a window or a door to someone else’s house? Is that a border that would be a crime?
Bet he thought the US crossing into Cambodia to attack the VC and NVA (that were already there) as a "crime". I also bet he did not/does not think the VC and NVA being in Cambodia (without permission!) as a "crime". Such is the way of the liberal "mind".
Thank you for the information and link. He reminds me of Hillary clinton who lied about her trips to other countries being under attack ducking bullets and running for her life. I truly hope in the next election the American people vote everyone of them out of office. They are taking our country away from us and we all need to vote every last one of them out of office. It’s time the AMERICAN people be heard and enough with congress either it’s Obamacare or illegal immigration
He didn’t have a problem with Clinton’s crimes either.
He’s a Democrat.
You think ten per cent of Mexico’s population “got lost” and wound up in our backyards by “mistake”?
It doesn’t “seem to be a crime” to you?
Are you for real?
New tagline today...at least for a little while...:)
That is not a logical comparison, in my opinion.
Those people ostensibly got lost. They weren’t TRYING to break any laws. You cannot say that about 99.9% of the people who cross the Rio Grande.
THEY aren’t just “lost”. They are deliberately violating the sovereignty of a country that is not theirs. They are deliberately breaking the law. They KNOW it is wrong.
I just disagree with your premise.
Even when they murder, rape, and steal, if they are illegals then they are not criminals and should be given Amnesty and a fast track to citizenship and voting rights, maybe the voting rights even before citizenship.
As a democrat, Harkin classifies non-citizens who commit crimes as future democrat voters.
OK names are close...
