Awesome story!!! Well written and achieves its purpose.

I wonder what the military guys on here think: in this type of situation are we more or less likely to be invaded by a foreign power? Would some other country use this as an opportunity to come in and take over when we are completely shattered and in dissarray? Or would this likely be worldwide chaos, with all developed countries suffering the same fate?

Sis and BIL sold the house for a lot less than its worth and then find out their credit is not bad because of a bankruptcy, they never had a bankruptcy, now they can’t mortgage a house. where can you get a rental with 2 cats and 3 dogs?

SO his uncles cousin had a rental house in New Braunfels but its “not quite ready”.

After seeing it, Sis and the kids are at a motel ($$) and the U-Hail truck is sitting here ($$)

There are no electric outlets, there are no plumbing fixtures. The extension cord and wifi are from next door, the landlord. It’s going to take weeks to make this liveable.

I haven’t used or seen a potty since yesterday.

Oh and I get the job of taking care of 2 traumatized indoor cats and a 100 lb pit bull who cannot come near each other. There is one tiny room with a thrown down carpet and A/C with a door, no knob. I have to put something against it to keep the dog from going in.

This might be some of the worst living conditions I have had in a long while.

When you move to the unkown, bring clean socks where they aren’t packed deeply into a 26’ U-Haul.

If you need to borrow a neighbors bathroom, leave the muddy shoes on the porch and clean socks are respectful.

I have no idea where the socks are.

“Would some other country use this as an opportunity to come in and take over when we are completely shattered and in disarray?”

If I was in charge of another country that was our enemy, I’d wait until most of the military was homosexual as it’s going to be, then attack. That is if the situation is like now when we still have electricity.

If power is out over the country, and they still have theirs, they will take us over without a fight.

Thank you for one of those stories you finish in one sitting. But, it worries the heck out of me for my friends in larger cities. And, I am not that far from a smaller city as the crow flies.

I’ll pass this on. Sadly, the average person will think it’s a nice work of fiction but will never happen. I pray they’re right.

My favorite line: "... the years before the Rupture were like living on the slopes of Vesuvius around AD seventy-something, while sniffing the stink of sulfur on the wind."

Nice job. What a nice break from formulaic action-movies with their inevitable exploding cars.

Ah yes, thank you Matt for finally posting, as I’d looked for this once it was mentioned in a previous thread!

It’s funny, though... due to other FReepers’ posts, I’ve learned I have a life-sustaining crop on my ‘worthless’ bottom land that even a diebetic can safely fill up on. I’m walkin’ on that stuff every time I tread the backyard firing range!

Reference your “And, need to send him some Zombie targets (which I have) for him to practice his aim. Actually, we have talked about practicing aim and we both use the same “weapon” to practice.”

You’ve reminded me - I’m just getting into Airsoft for inexpensive (& indoor!) shooting practice. To my best FRiend, I mentioned having shot myself with the plastic BB because, “If I’m gonna shoot you with it, I’m testing it out on myself, first.”

He said, “Wha-HUH?!”

Some people ain’t got no sense of adventure, I tell yew whut.

Gee Travis... Honestly that's kinda grim.

Grim 'cause it's plausible... Plausible enough anyway.

'Specially nowadays...

If we have a ground rule of "No macho talk", what's a guy to do? That is, what's a guy to do after paying the mortgage, etc, and doing all the stuff he's got to do to keep up with the Murrays? (Name changed to preserve integrity of hypothetical question...)

Yep, that’s a fact. I have a terrific little brass compass that attaches via a safety pin to any vertical piece of clothing or a backpack strap. It’s not for precision, but it’s hands-free and keeps you on course, day or night.

“Continuity of govt” operations are mostly about protecting the elites. But sooner or later, even the most cushy bunker runs out of foot, water and clean air. (It has to be moved by electrical pumps.) Having the national leadership survive will have nothing at all to do with the real problem, which will be our exploding and burning cities, a week after the power is out. Once the stores are looted (about day 3) it will be Katie bar the door, literally. Like an airlocked diesel engine, restarting will be very difficult. Stomping on the accelerator and turning the key will accomplish nothing. Our just in time food delivery system will turn into a curse.

And those who think they are safe because they are not near a major urban center, they need to think again. Almost all of the food distribution infrastructure relies on safe passage through those urban centers, which will quickly be in flames.

People need to seriously ask themselves where the food they eat comes from. I’d guess that 90% of it spends time on 18 wheelers that must drive through cities to get to your local supermarket. If the cities explode, the trucks will be looted, and they will not be coming to your nice little town anymore.

If the USA implodes, I think the rest of the technological world will suffer the same or similar fates. The computer networks that run everything are now global in scope. I don’t think China or any other nation will be in a position to invade the USA.

Sorry to hear that! You are experiencing some hard times but you will get through. Imagine the landscape with ALL of the power down, everywhere, and how much worse it would be.

I’m going to make a printed copy of the anthology in a few months, after I do reprints of my other titles.

I see a “World Cyber War One” as a real possibility. It could leave a lot of the globe without power or communications in almost no time at all. Without firing an EMP nuke. Cyber enemies could cause our pipelines to jam or burst, our grid to collapse, our water plants to contaminate themselves, trains to derail, the list goes on and on.

I pray they are right too. My sincerest hope is that in ten years I’m considered a forgotten former hack writer, in a free and prosperous America that is the envy of the world.

But I do see icebergs ahead of our Titanic, and I write about them.
