Pat Robertson probably saved us from destruction.

He would have blamed it on gays.

They nearly went off, except that the “ARMED” switch was not thrown.

I nearly shot myself at the range this morning, except that the muzzle was pointed downrange instead of at my head. A guy in my town nearly shot his ex-wife, if by “nearly” you mean it went off “while he was cleaning it” and the bullet missed her by a few inches. Those are two very different usages of “nearly”.

A lot of things nearly happen, if by “nearly” you mean something different from what most people mean. Only some of those hypothetical situations are real.

“Not if you don’t mind living without electricity. True about laptops and ipods, an EMP would still have fried the electronics in cars and trucks.”

Yeah, I don’t know about that... The only “electronics” in vehicles back then were points, condensers, and coils. I am not even sure that these can be damaged by an EMP, and if they were, they are easily replaceable.

Remember this was 1961...

‘61. Mostly vacuum tubes and analog systems. We would have faired pretty well in that regard.

You believe that LBJ set off a nuclear explosion as a political statement to the locals?

Sarcsam, right?

You think America deserves to be nuked because it contains some aholes?

If that is all that is needed, it would have blown up here in 1945.

Hopefully, God has a different view than you do.

Not in 1961. The world was not as transistorized as it is now. Most vehicles would have worked. Most electric systems could have been repaired. Not like today, where everything is run by computers.

I can't be the only FReeper that remembers this story from way back.

Even to the point that there was only one failsafe remaining.

Any other FReepers remember this? Or did I somehow get caught in a time machine.

I guess it’s drinking, then.

People who make claims of being intellectual while expressing utterly moronic thoughts are amusing.

You know, the circuitry in nuclear weapons is constantly monitored, making the failure of a low voltage switch nothing short of a miracle.

Aholes like you would rather interpret that as wanting America nuked. Perhaps the DU is more your speed. They have a number of people such as you with low IQ and no reading comprehension, who are also first grade dropouts. I strongly suggest you take your stupid a$$ back over there.

I thought the post was saying it was an a above-ground detonation.

Funny, it doesn't say that. You seem to have a serious problem with reading comprehension, and jumping to conclusions.

A little "cognitive dissonance" as it were.

The reason I was misled was the poster’s implication that it was politically motivated

Feeble excuses.
