A French store keeper is charged with murder after shooting an assailant. The episode has sparked widespread outrage in the country. Many are critical fo the socialist government for being too lax.
Political correctness run amok.
Socialist government. That says it all. How dare anybody defend themselves. If they start thinking like that, pretty soon they’ll start thinking they don’t need the gangster-socialists to run their lives, and turn those weapons on the government-gangsters.
The shopkeeper shot the thief in the back as the thief was fleeing on a motorbike. Odd that the Blaze does not mention that detail. Or maybe it's not so odd.
Anyway, I'd have a hard time convicting the shopkeeper. He was terrified, I'm sure. And it was not the shopkeeper who put all of this in motion. It was the thief.
Nice in the 80’s was awesome.
Sort of like a French Miami with rocky beaches, but at least the guys were straight :-)
IF the article is accurate, maybe you can tell us how shooting at a fleeing robber is “standing your ground” - political correctness, socialism or otherwise.

Mr. Turk told the police that he shot twice at the motor scooter in an attempt to immobilize it, and it was only when one of the robbers turned to him in a threatening way with his automatic weapon that Mr. Turk shot him dead.
So it's not quite as cut and dried as shooting a fleeing robber in the back, although I certainly wouldn't recommend the "shoot out the tires of your fleeing attackers" strategy as a self defense tactic.
It's interesting (but not surprising) how the various news outlets include or exclude information about this story.
even in the People’s Repulik of Maryland one can still lawfully shoot a fleeing felon ... and these people were certainly fleeing felons
now proving to His Majesty OweMalley and his merry band of misfits that you were simply following the law is another story so I don’t recommend that action
IIRC, the thief was already making his escape on a motor scooter and the jeweler shot him in the back.
With the possible exception of Texas (OOH-RAH! Texas!), shooting a thief in the back will get you jailed anywhere, Stand Your Ground or no.
He better hope there is CCTV footage of the robber turning with his weapon or that the jury will take his word for it.
Ditto your post for the state of Washington. A year ago a shop keeper shot a kid in the back from 120’ and no charges filed. This year a guy shot a car thief as he fled and is being brought up on charges. Hopefully the jurors will follow the law and find him not guilty. It’s a crap shoot.
No, because SYG wouldn’t have applied in the French case. From what I understand, it was more of a “Joe Horn” scenario, where the store owner chased the thieves and shot them while they were escaping.
we have MAKE MY DAY laws in commierado that are very clear about where you can and can’t shoot. in your house and a threat fair game, fleeing the house or stealing your car IN THE DRIVEWAY they don’t apply. shooting at the driver as he tries to run you down good. putting 5 rounds in the back window after he misses you not good. may be justified and even morally correct but legally wrong.
I don’t have a problem with shooting the criminal in the back while he is running away. He still committed the crime and we are supposed to let him run away? Not in my opinion.
