Boehner: 'It is time for us to stand and fight'
Politico ^ | October 6, 2013 | JENNIFER EPSTEIN

House Speaker John Boehner says he wasn't pulled into demanding concessions from Democrats to keep funding the government - he willingly joined with fellow Republicans.

"I and my members decided that the threat of Obamacare and what was happening was so important that it was time for us to take a stand. And we took a stand," the Ohio Republican said Sunday on ABC's "This Week.".......

"You've never seen a more dedicated group of people who are thoroughly concerned about the future of our country," he said of House Republicans. "It is time for us to stand and fight."

Here's what's really at stake in the shutdown battle The establishment media and Washington's permanent political class continue to try to sell the idea that taking the fight over defunding ObamaCare to the point that it has caused a partial government shutdown is a losing proposition for Republicans. That's supposedly because 17 years ago the polls showed that the public held the GOP more responsible than Democrats for such inconveniences as the closure of the national parks and the National Aquarium.

But conservatives must continue to think strategically and look beyond today's news cycle at what is really at stake in the ObamaCare battle. It isn't who “wins” or “loses” in the short term according to the vote count on the next continuing resolution. It is which side comes out of the fight having educated the voters, energized and enlarged their base and branded their opponents as dangerously wrong on health care.

In that respect the lessons that conservatives should take away are not those learned in the budget battles with President Bill Clinton in the 1990s but the battle conservatives fought over the Panama Canal Treaty with President Jimmy Carter—and the Republican establishment—in the 1970s....

[snip]

Sens.Ted Cruz,Mike Lee,and Paul and dozens of tea party-backed House members understand that this strategy is not for today's news cycle. The battle is focused on bringing constitutional conservatives to power by 2017.

And they also understand that the Republican establishment is as great—or greater—an adversary in this fight than are President Obama and the Democrats in Congress.

So expect conservatives to redouble their efforts to defeat establishment Big Government Republicans in the primaries next year, including John Cornyn,Lamar Alexander and Mitch McConnell as well as establishment House Republicans.

Sens. Lee and Cruz have, through their principled opposition to funding ObamaCare, re-energized millions of grassroots conservative voters who were turned off by the Republican establishment's content-free technocratic campaign in 2012.....

Or he received a donor spine or set of testicles.

Either way, as critical as I've been of Boehner (I predicted he'd fold within 24 hours of the shutdown ....) it appears that now's the time to come to his side and voice our support.

Truth is, this is a battle that needs to be fought, or the United States of America as we know it may truly be lost forever. Trust me on this one, I'm having serious misgivings about whether or not to back Boehner only to have him cave later -- however it appears the House Republican's are standing firm. I think it's time to encourage him and voice our support.

Boehner must have remembered where he left his testicles! Either that or his wife must have given them back to him.

Regardless, hats off to the Speaker of the House! I will give credit when credit is due.

Yes, but for how long? With your pathetic history of backing down to the ignorant limp-wristed pansy (which to date makes you the only one on earth who has), I'm not holding my breath. You're in a winning situation, but you and the rest of the gutless, ball-less, GOPe have yet to demonstrate that you have the intelligence, principles, or testicular fortitude to see it through...

If past is any indication, that is correct. I’m thinking a complete fold by the 17th, when he’ll fold again. This country has had it.

Almost a week of trying to throw WWII vets out of their own Memorial and they still blame the Republicans.

I’ve been saying that from the start or nearly the start when they got summoned to the WH and came away empty handed.

1. 0bama was announcing his no negotiation stance long before Cruz was even thinking about the filibuster.

2. After the “summons” 0bama dared to talk down the markets. Who in their right mind would even do that?

3. All the pesky closures of open air memorials etc.

4. Boehner was the first to say not to worry about the debt ceiling, it will get funded.

5. 0bama countered with a threat to use the 14th Amendment and unilaterally raise the debt ceiling. (14th Amendment only matters during an insurrection or rebellion...hmmm)

I think 0bama tipped his hand to Boehner. We’ve been wondering a long time what the administration has on Boehner that makes him capitulate so much. We may never know, but this stunt by the regime may have been Boehner’s last straw.

Boehner may know there is nothing he can do to stop 0bama & his regime, because they have already scraped the Constitution. There’s been some behind the scenes stuff muddling through the internet. FEMA/DHS preparing for something big mid-month in the eastern region, Oath Keepers going “operational,” some nerve racking stuff bubbling about. I know here they’ve gone from telling us to have 72 hours of supplies on hand to having 2 weeks worth(actual radio announcements).

We’re not winning anything, this is just the opening salvo to a very long, bumpy ride.

I couldn't agree with you more. Anyone is capable of change for the better and Boehner is no exception. I have no objection to healthy skepticism but so many posts on this thread are outright cynical. We have nothing to lose if we can pull Boehner to our side and everything to lose by pushing him away. A little Christian charity instead of snarky comments would be more persuasive.

You don’t understand....many on here would rather pull out their tired over used snarks about Boehner than admit he might finally do something right.

I’ve been as critical of him as anyone....in published articles and books....but he’s been better the past week than I would have ever guessed. Alien abduction, too many martinis’ - whatever - I’ll take it for now. Would never say I trust him or think he’s really changed based on this, but some people around here would rather bitch and complain and be negative than actually assess when something good might (I stress MIGHT) be happening.

True that - he changed for the worse between 1996 and 2012 - maybe - just maybe - he’s drifting back to the Boehner of pre 1996 - he was very much “tea party” back then many years before there was a tea party.

Do I trust him yet? Oh hell no. But this is welcome news.

Yes, he needs our prayers - since we know this rare show of courage is not intuitive for him especially. And FTR, I tire of people who relentlessy criticize a certain person for a certain behavoir, and then when they get exactly what they’ve been asking for - refuse to ackowledge it.

If we don’t admit when he stumbles into something right, then we have zero cred when we criticize him.
