The only other tact that I think might work is “conservative to be kind”—disputing the harebrained idea that Leftism is the kind and sensitive thing to do for the less fortunate.
In my experience, if you don’t counter that argument ears aren’t open.
Most older libs are libs because they are imputing righteousness on themselves for “caring about the poor/earth/etc”.
When I told one of these how their policies had destroyed black families, from the look on her face you would have thought I’d slapped her.
With young libs, though, it’s different. It’s usually a matter of arrogance, as they aren’t thinking about judgement day as much as an older person would be.
