Jerk of the Week - North Andover High School and Zero Tolerance

It seems that every day our country slides further into insanity. Whether it's the mainstream media lying to our faces or the fiscal madness from our tax-and-spend politicians, it's enough to drive normal Americans mad. I don't know why I'm still surprised when some new absurdity raises its head, making me ponder, "Why?" There are so many individuals, groups, and institutions that act against the common good that we feel that they need to be singled out for our Jerk of the Week honors. Sadly, we seem to never run out of candidates, no matter how much we wish that it wasn't so. Our winner for Jerk of the Week is North Andover High School and zero tolerance.

Headlines were made this week when North Andover High School in Massachusetts suspended a student on the girls volleyball team for five games and took away her team captaincy. Who was this miscreant and what were her terrible crimes that required the full administrative weight of the school to crash down upon her? The student in question is Erin Cox, 17, and she's an honor student. Her unforgivable act was that a friend, who was at an underage drinking party, got drunk and called her for a ride home as she realized that she was too drunk to drive. Not wanting her friend to drive drunk and risk causing an accident, Erin Cox went to the party to pick her friend up. Minutes later, the cops arrived and busted the party. Cox wasn't arrested but the entire situation was written up in a police report.

When the North Andover High School found out about the situation, they penalized Cox for violating the school's zero tolerance policy towards alcohol and drugs. Mind you, the police even noted in their report that Erin Cox wasn't drinking and was there to pick up an inebriated friend. The school's weasel-like attorney, Geoffrey Bok, said that, " “The school is really trying to take a very serious and principled stand regarding alcohol." This is utter bull. In fact, the school is punishing mature, sober behavior by penalizing Erin Cox. Schools harp incessantly about the dangers of drinking and driving, even going so far as to bring the mangled remains of a wrecked car onto campuses, but when a student acts responsibly to stop drunk driving, they get excoriated for doing so. By their actions the school is telling the kids to sit back and do nothing to help prevent drunk driving and the attendant dangers.

Zero tolerance policies are the refuge of the moronic and ignorant. Having the same knee-jerk reaction to a hundred different variations of a situation just flies in the face of common sense. Of course, school officials are happy with zero tolerance policies as it reflects their lockstep ideology of liberalism where there is no compromise, no mitigating factors, or just plain no-harm-intended. These same yahoos who freak out over a young boy bringing a keychain with a toy gun attached that he won from a vending machine are the same ones who defend to their dying breath the action of aborting an unborn child. What a mixed-up set of priorities these folks have. Common sense not only left the building, it sold its house and moved out of the state. For their incredibly stupid actions and zero tolerance attitude, North Andover High School is our Jerk of the Week.

violating the school's zero tolerance policy towards alcohol and drugs

So, this zero policy includes any activity outside of school property?

Oh, I forgot the state owns our children.

Obviously the brains at North Andover H.S. feel it’s better to let the drunk friend drive and possibly kill herself and someone else.

Socialist-entitlement K-12 schooling, that was never more than lukewarmly Protestant in its worldview and is now completely godless, is our nation's and freedom's MOST serious threat.

As a nation we can survive a terrorist attack. We've proven that, but freedom will NOT survive if we continue in the way we educate the nation's children.

Right now, nearly every teacher in this nation, both in private and government schools, was trained by godless Marxists in Marxist-run colleges and universities. Yet....Conservatives and Christians seem unaware and unconcerned and the schools continue to be stuffed full to the brim with their children.

May God save this nation and Western Civilization.

There were FR posters supporting the school. Argument was rules are there... She knew that in advance and deserves punishment. I’m calling those posters” Totalitarian Fanboys”

The real purpose of zero-tolerance is to ensure that at least some white students get disciplinary actions taken on them, so that the proportion of white and black disciplinary subjects does not draw the wrath of Eric Holder’s gang.

I agree. The school should not have any interest in the situation as it occurred off of school grounds and not during the school day.
