Posted on 10/25/2013 8:15:29 AM PDT by Cincinatus' Wife
Sen. Mitch McConnells (R-Ky.) campaign on Friday ramped up their attacks on his Republican primary opponent's business record, accusing Matt Bevin of possibly committing a misdemeanor.
The allegations arose after the McConnell campaign released documents showing Bevin failed to report a tax lien on a $100,000 application for a state grant in Connecticut to reopen his business which had burned down in a fire.
The McConnell camp brought in a Connecticut attorney to point out Bevin may have broken the law.
Now, I am not a prosecutor, I am not a judge and I am not a jury, but if I was Mr. Bevins attorney I would be very concerned," said Peter Martin, who is also an adviser to the McConnell campaign.
McConnell's attacks come after Bevin received the endorsement last week of the Senate Conservatives Fund, a prominent conservative group. The Senate Minority leader is in a tough contest: facing a primary challenge from the Tea Party-supported Bevin on the right and from Democrat Alison Lundergan Grimes in the general election.
The allegations stem from a grant Bevin applied for in June 2012 to reopen Bevin Bros. Manufacturing Co. after a fire. Bevin signed an application, saying there are no federal tax claims or liens assessed or filed against the company he owned. However, Bevin had a $74,000 IRS tax lien at the time, according to reports.
McConnells campaign released a summary of the events Friday, alleging that under Connecticut law, Mr. Bevin may be guilty of a class A misdemeanor, which could result in up to a year in jail and a $2,000 fine.
Bevin told BuzzFeed, which first reported the news, that he paid off the lien in September 2012, more than two months after he signed the application.
At the time Mr. Bevin signed the Certificate under oath, a tax lien in fact was filed against his company contrary to the representations made in the Certificate, said Martin.
Bevin had initially come to an agreement with the IRS to pay off the lien in installments, he told BuzzFeed, but the IRS agreed to suspend payments after the fire.
In a statement, Bevin said "Quite frankly this is a shameful display unbecoming of the senior senator from Kentucky, and his attempts to distract voters from his liberal record are beyond desperate."
When you can’t run on your record, you just attack!
Hey Mitch, when did you stop beating your wife?
You and I see eye to eye on most things here, but I have to ask...Why are we beating up on our own people, when we should be beating up the democrats? I know McConnell’s record is not perfect, but if he loses the primary, what then? We give another unforced error lost Senate seat to the democrats.
Enough of this. Let’s get a clear majority in both houses and the presidency.
pretty weak, Mitch
MItch take your ill gotten gains and go home and take your lovely beltway wife with you. You’ve both done enough damage to the country.
I know a lot of Freepers don’t want tohear this, but Mc Connell is the number one target of Democrats in 2014. They will stop at nothing to defeat him. Don’t be surprised to see some Dem. money funneled into the Bevin campaign via PACS disguised as Tea Party.
Shove it up your smelly Obamahole, Mitch.
Oh, forgot, you’re already a good way up Obama’s smelly Obamahole.
Of course not. the only time McConnell fights is against conservatives.
It wasn't the rats who cut Cruz's legs out from under him in the recent fight to postpone obamacare. It was McConnell, McCain, Graham and the rest of the GOPe in the Senate. They're the same as the rats...the enemy. They are not interested in smaller government and individual liberty. Those ideals cut into their personal power, perks and priveleges.
If there's an agreement on a lien, then that lien's been handled. If you don't owe anything because of an agreement, then there's in reality no lien.
Good. I'm sure Bevin can use the money.

I am not sure Mitch can retain the seat even if he wins the primary. He is not very popular in KY. Bevin is a very good candidate from what I’ve seen and he will have a better chance of winning in 2014. If not, then we still have addition by subtraction without Mitch around. Go get him Bevin. Oh, and let’s take out Gramnesty as well.
This is a good sign.
McConnell’s desparate attacks indicate that his campaign’s polls show Bevin leading.
This is a must-win election for conservatives.
This is the best that Mush Mouth’s op research team can come up with?
So I must say - The Senate tossed Cruz over. KY Sen McConnell helped with malice. What Sen Cruz and Co. vailently did has changed the demographics and the momentum and there is no going back now. KY Sen Paul has endorsed McConnell. TX Sen Cruz has not endorsed the senior Sen from TX, Sen Cornyn. All signs point to following Sen Cruz's lead.
I used to agree with this sentiment. In fact, I might have agreed with you before we squandered our last hope of turning things around during the government shutdown. But now we have moved on to immigration reform. The GOP are going to welcome a few million new democratic voters as citizens through amnesty, likely before the next election. We are hosed. It's a numbers game. I have not confidence we can win many national elections in the already blue to purple states anywhere.
For this reason, I am now in the camp that says, get the RINOS out in primaries regardless of the risk at the general election polls. I don't think we have much of anything left to lose.
If organized correctly and we get commitments from several sitting politicians to change party affiliation, I'd support a third party called "The Conservative Party." It would hurt for a few election cycles for sure. But I think we are pretty much done in the senate and the executive branch for at least another 10 to 12 years, especially when the illegals start voting openly.
Mitch needs to be sent packing back to the land of Eunuchs.
Scum rising to the surface, ya think?
How about that sleazy pay off to your state Mitch?
You know that additional pork in the recent bill along with the widow Lautenberg’s payoff?
Of course not. the only time McConnell fights is against conservatives.
Good point. It's been said before. But if these RINOs fought half as hard against the president and dems as they did against conservatives and the Tea Party, Obamacare would be rotting in the trash bin of history by now.
What makes you so certain Bevin would lose the general election after beating McConnell in the primary?
Mitch is making typical estab mistakes.....he thinks his problem is Bevin. It is not. If Mitch would focus on the real problem: Reid, Schumer, Obama - he wouldn’t have a Bevin problem.
I hope Bevin does what Lee Bright is doing in SC.....running against Obama/Reid/Schumer by way of Lindsey Graham. Or running against Graham by way of Obama/Reid/Schumer...however you want to look at it. That’s what Bevin should do.
It’s time to play hardball.
Cruz and Co are ready to take the field.
Senator McConnell must leave the field.
Uh, yeah! Why is McConnell beating up on Bevin!!
Talk about issues. McConnell, you need to trumpet your record in the Senate.
(I suspect he’s too embarrassed about his record. It is easier to attack the other Republican who is asking questions.)
Yep, it’s working for Lee. Even with 4 challengers to Graham, all of whom are preferable to LG - Lee is racking up major national endorsements already because he’s the only one running against the liberal agenda and Obama/Reid/Schumer and LG as a willing dupe for them.
I hope he doesn’t cry when he gets his arse handed to him.
This CLEARLY exposes Mitch “the Bitch” as a left-wing RINO when using Pelosi style tactics like this (the Newt play).
We had a majority not so long ago and you see how the leadership blew that one.
Energy policy could have been so much different.. none of this massive green slush money, at least nowhere near the scale of what we see now..
But Mitch was in control then too.. and you want to keep him? lol
Change in mthe Gop leadership is a hard concept for some to grasp here at FR.. especially positive change.
It must be the environment .. or global varming. Jaaa.
I would vote for Pauly Walnuts before I would vote for your corrupt arse mitch. You are a criminal because you have committed treason against your own party, the base and the republic at large. You have been in DC too long and you are a coward. You have NEVER ATTACKED A DIMRAT IN THE WAY YOU ATTACK CONSERVATIVES. YOUR DAYS AS A POWER BROKER ARE OVER... YOU ARE FINISHED MITCHIPOO!
However in the REAL world, small business owners and individuals get tax liens all the time as the IRS thinks nothing of laying that on people to get their way, even when their numbers are dead wrong - the taxpayer's credit rating be damned.
It’s because in some cases there is little or no difference.
Sent a campaign contribution to Bevin only last week.
The gop is over... dead... kaput... the only way it survives is if Conservatives take it over.
And what then; the GOPe continues the country down the road to liberalism, and it's people into serfdom? No thanks; real change won't come until the GOPe is defeated, so they can no longer muddy the waters on the difference between Conservatism vs liberalism, and giving the Dems cover.
There is a battle for the future and soul of this country and its the GOPe and Dems against the Conservatives.
You’re not allowed to run against a RINO, now?
BTW, how weak is “I suck as a Senator, but regardless how bad I am, you can’t elect that guy because he’s a crook!”
Did you actually just say McConnell is the one and only Republican who can win the seat??? If Bevin wins the primary, the seat is lost? Why? The Democrat isn't an incumbent either. Besides, if we really have reached the point where the only Republican who could ever be elected to anything is a scumbag appeaser Quisling, then it's time to stop worrying about electing Republicans at all.
Here is the problem:
Mcconnel is to conservatism what Sowell is to black race baiters. Sowel can say things about them that a white man can’t because, after all, he’s “one of them”.
Same with McConnel and it hit HARD this morning. On my way to work NPR played a sound byte from him. As usual he’s bashing the R’s but as I listened, it hit me: He literally sounded like a democrat plant trying to bash the party just enough to where he didn’t overplay his hand. I mean, if he really WERE a plant, he would have said what he, in fact, did say.
An enemy within the tent can do far more damage than the enemy without. It means we must get rid of him with haste.
This is why I say I would vote for a democrat against him. Oh, and I live in Kentucky.
For me, this one is almost personal.
You CAN'T be serious. I doubt more than half the Dems realize McConnell's nominally an (R). Why would they bother to target him? With McPantsStain and Miss Linda, he's part of the ruling leftist coalition.
Soetoro breaks the law every day and not a peep from McCornhole.
Are you kidding?
RINOs are Democrats
Should we wait until after they pass amnesty?
The GOPe is on a suicide run and primarying them is the way to fix this mess
Mitch is running scared, no doubt about it. And based on these attacks then they must have internal polls showing that they should be.
we once had both houses and the White house and nothing was done with the opportunity
You make it sound like you think Bevin would have no chance of winning in the general election. Why?
So this is worse than a 3 billion dollar bribe McConnell received to continue ObamaCare
