I think Mr. ForAmerica was coming at from the black/slave angle. You missed the mark.

“By the time John Brown hung from the gallows for his crimes at Harper’s Ferry, Northern abolitionists had made him a “holy martyr” in their campaign against Southern slave owners. This Northern hatred for Southerners long predated their objections to slavery. They were convinced that New England, whose spokesmen had begun the American Revolution, should have been the leader of the new nation. Instead, they had been displaced by Southern “slavocrats” like Thomas Jefferson. This malevolent envy exacerbated the South’s greatest fear: a race war. Jefferson’s cry, “We are truly to be pitied,” summed up their dread. For decades, extremists in both regions flung insults and threats, creating intractable enmities. By 1861, only a civil war that would kill a million men could save the Union.”

I’ve met him once and he blew my mind away with the knowledge he has.

Perhaps, from your perspective cva. But the “black/slave angle” is self-evident. Even the most fervent neo-cornfederates admit that “slavery was dying out” (as part of their rationalism for legitimizing the insurrection). The dismantlement of The Particular Institution was inevitable - it would not be stopped, but could be shaped. Unfortunately the slavocracy-led south wished to hold on - at any cost.

Specific to the “black/slave angle” and ForAmerica’s question - for the brief moment that Texas would be separate from the United States it would (by virtue of the desires and aspirations of its rulers) be a slave state. And then history and events would overtake them and he (and Texas) would be right where they are.

It didn’t take long for the pro Lincoln crowd to stir things up.

Going a few rounds with the Lincoln cult eh?

So it's the freepers that aren't pro-confederate who are displaying cult-like behavior? Excuse me while I laugh.

Re: the Lincoln cult & pro-confederate-- cult-like behavior

Gadzooks, what a hornet's nest both sides are poking! I honor my Southern Heritage, Distant Cousin Bobby Lee and old Honest Abe all the same. They are historical figures from my nation's history and I do not wish to trash them.

If you will notice, at the end of the Civil War or The Late Southern Rebellion as it is mostly called in the Deep South, there was not wholesale slaughter of the defeated soldiers or former rebel civilians. Look around at modern civil wars and the mass slaughter of one or both sides is a given. Look at the Middle East. Look at the recent Rwandan or Burundi Civil Wars or the recent Balkan conflicts where death camps and mass massacres were the norm.

Ours may have been a civil war but it was downright civilized compared to those of today.

Yes, there was a severe Reconstructions Period that hardened the re-assimilation of the body politic. Those hard feelings lasted until the Spanish American War at the turn of the century where ex-Confederate officers co-commanded American troops in Cuba.

While napscoordinator may spit on the history of the Civil War period, I am proud of my nation and the men on both sides for coming out of it to build a grand nation that bred me.

However, I temper this as I fear we are going through a very, very bad period nowadays where the Federal Government in the hands of the Liberal Democrats hellbent to radically change the basic fabric of our nation and make Christian, Catholic or Jewish citizens an oppressed minority even if they are in the actual majority. I see these and other of their PC Correct/Global Warming/etc actions have the possibility of tearing us apart again.

If necessary I will shed my blood and/or give my life to protect and defend the US Constitution against all enemies, foreign and domestic.

I am not at all sure what napscoordinator would do--

I believe one of the last straws was his going onto a religious thread in the religion forum, and repeating a blasphemous phrase regarding Jesus Christ. It was un-called for and in the wrong place, as if a Christian were to go onto a Jewish thread and start spouting anti-Semitic comment out of the blue.

The War of Northern Aggression is how I refer to what is commonly called our “Civil War”.

Lincoln would have given his left nut to have General Robert E. Lee as his lead general over that second-stringer, Ulysses S. Grant.

The bottom line is that our Constitution came under a devastating assault by President Lincoln and has not been the same ever since.

I have often wondered how things might be different today, had the Confederacy won that War.

The again, I also wonder where we would be if TODD BEAMER and his fellow passengers had just stayed in their seats on 11 September, 2001. Would we be saddled with Barak Hussein Obama living large in OUR White House today? Somehow, I think not. He would still be pushing his shit cart around the Windbag City, is my guess.

It does seem to have more than one thing in common, including contempt for fellow Americans who hail from the South and honor their heritage. General American heritage has its dark places, but I don’t see these types excoriating anyone for celebrating American heritage with its good and its bad.

Amd many southerners, General Lee included, foresaw the necessity for the end of the “peculiar institution” as a blot and a stain, not to mention being prescient in foreseeing future problems. What they fought for was something else entirely. General Lee had much anguish in making his decision to go home to Virginia, for that very reason. He seemed to have felt that in the big picture, a great principle, that of States’ Rights, required defense, before dealing with the blot. He was right-states lost their rights, but the victory of the North didn’t stop the US, in WWII, from interning Japanese Americans who had not been tried or convicted of treason. Bit the states have been steadily losing their rightful ground to the fed gov ever since.
