Upon migrating to the United States many years ago, I embraced my new home and left the past behind. Never could I imagine that, at some point, that past would become relevant.
But now, I am compelled to talk about it again.
In the USSR, we had state-controlled media which shaped the narrative entirely.
Our founder, Vladimir Lenin, was portrayed as a noble, charismatic, and smart man -- the champion of the underdog (the working class), the seeker of equality, defeater of the rich. The humble man with common ideas who was destined for greatness.
Lenin peered at us intently from textbooks and walls. His was the face behind the good intentions that shaped our everyday life.
As a kid, I was largely shielded by my family -- they took the brunt of "adult tasks" in everyday life. They bribed officials to accomplish the most basic of things, they conserved every kopek and piece of bread, they got me the rare medicines I needed, all through means I didn't dare fathom.
Of course, there was nothing special about those medicines, those favors, or anything else that took such effort to obtain -- in America, you can just go out and get it in a corner store. In the Soviet Union, the word "deficit" was commonly used in everyday language.

Stalin killed more than Hitler. The ignorance is by design. Young people taught lies are easier to manipulate.
Daily Show and Colbert are part of the propaganda arm. They are a primary “news source” for college aged kids and shape the argument. Democrats are “young and hip” and a republicans are squares.
Even with massive unemployment and lost life opportunities, the young vote Rat when they bother to vote.
We really should be listening to these people.

Later a Moscow grocery store had just opened and we went to the grand opening day. The manager offered me a job on the spot because he knew all Americans were workaholics.
Most of us are well aware of this. I am beginning to think, like what happened in the Soviet Union, eventually the system collapses under its own weight. Other than that, I do not know what will stop our relentless march toward communism, or if there is anything that will stop it.

Powerful stuff. But I can imagine some 20-year-old Berkleyite reading it and smiling patronizingly at the author, while patting him on the back and murmuring “That’s okay, Mr. Alesky. We’ve fixed all those bad things. THIS time, we’ll do communism right.”
I just got very brave and posted it to my Facebook page. I really don’t care anymore. I want to be known as one of the ones who warned people ....and then let God sort it out from there.
We visited E. Germany back in the late 80’s when the wall was falling when hubby was a young military officer. We got a glimpse of that life as we drove through the darkened E. Germany “corridor” (their name for a highway which had no lights and which they totally controlled). When we crossed into E. Berlin from W. Berlin, it was like the lights went out. No goods in the store windows, cameras everywhere, “guards” everywhere, waving you on, now allowing us to park where we wanted to. Having to show your “papers” to do anything.
It was exactly as this author describes ...just gray. No color, no variety. No religion (crosses had been removed from the churches, and the churches were broken down and crumbling). Everything the same. Everything broken down and crappy looking. I can’t imagine the lives these people led from day to day.
Most Americans, even the liberal idiots we have would go absolutely nuts having to live in such an environment ...but this is where we’re headed.
Before I read your comment, I also got brave and posted it to Facebook. I tend to be pretty apolitical there. I am starting to get tired of the argument being so one-sided, because people like me are keeping their mouths shut. It is time.

This is the typical Soviet mentality, and they were used to it, and they bought into it, and then they entered that American supermarket and saw the rows upon rows of milk of different brands and kinds and fat percentages.
This is where some have been known to cry. It is the realization that their lives were stolen from them by the regime. A realization of what could've been, if they had been lucky enough to be born in this place which, from everything they knew, could not possibly exist.
I want to cry when I see US happily/officially trading away the opportunities to have whatever our minds, bodies, will and discipline can create for the utopia the author describes.
It's very hard to not hate the demonrats and republicans who are doing this to US.

That time is now.
Back in the 1980s, friends of ours hosted some Russians. I don’t recall under what aegis, but I do remember that our friend took them shooting, which they enjoyed. Next, they asked to see some stores, so he took them around our rural area. They laughed and insisted they were being shown Potemkin stores. Our friend then gave them a map and told them to pick anywhere at all within reasonable driving distance. They did and after seeing the same variety and abundance everywhere, they were shocked into silence.
I’m sure at that point, they began to understand.
Maybe ten years later, a university professor we knew spent a year in Norway teaching her specialty. Needing shoes, she went shopping with a Norwegian colleague. The American complained that every store had the same small inventory and the Norwegian answered that that was all the choice they needed.
Ask a college student and they will tell you that variety and abundance are wasteful and unnecessary. Competition is harmful. Profit is theft. Etc.
America is going to have to endure its own sojourn into hell. I simply do not see the mass of will necessary to change the overall outcome. Small battles are won, but the war appears to have been lost.
I read posts smugly asserting what President Palin or President Cruz will do, once elected. IMO, they will not run and if they do, they will be defeated. If they do win, they will be forced by the bureaucracy and their handlers to make nothing more than tiny cosmetic changes in order not to endanger the position of their Party.
I read the comments at news sites and at You Tube. Our alternative media, our entertainment always garners contempt. Even if all the negative posts are by partisan activists, they have the desired effect of countering our message. If a few do understand, they keep quiet because they understand even more fully, just because they live within the society, that speaking out is a risk.
