Today my 91 year old Grandma fell. My Mom and Aunt went to her house as she was able to get to the phone (they'll probably get her a Life Alert bracelet now even though she has been vocal about not wanting one). She said it was her thigh that hurt, and she had no hip pain. However, she couldn't put weight on it. They called a life squad, and she was taken to the ER. The doctor surprised everyone when they said she had broken her hip. That's one thing you don't want on an elderly person.
The doctor said she has to have a full hip replacement in the morning. They want her walking as soon as possible which is good. A couple years ago she was in the hospital and in bed for a week. It took her several months to be fully walking again, and it wasn't even a leg related injury. It was just that the muscles must be used at that age. She ended up having to do therapy to recover in a nursing home, and she absolutely was miserable. She hated it. To top that off, she had a stroke that time because the doctor messed with her blood thinner, and she had a very difficult time. She's very independent.
The doctor was optimistic and said he had a 95 year old farmer who broke his hip, had the surgery, and is now back farming again. I hope my Grandma has such great results. Your prayers will be much appreciated.

My 98 year old mother broke her leg 2 years ago. The put a pin in it and sent her to rehab. She’s living in assisted living and walks with a walker now, but the leg healed just fine.

Like other posters, I have seen 91 year olds have hip surgery and do just fine. Just tell her to follow the doctor’s orders do ,the physical therapy exercises and she’ll come through this fine.
I have been through all of that with my grandmother before she died at over 100, very similar story so I can relate.
When she was in her 80s she used to tell me she would rather take a pill that puts her down rather then get old and be taken care of, and I would reply that the doctor doesn’t prescribe those types of pills,
Those years in their 90s are brutal and it takes down those who once were the most healthy, strong, independent and brave.
If they live long enough they become a person almost unrecognizable from their past selves.

My mother had breast cancer that metasticized into a brain tumor. The tumor affected her mobility. She absolutely insisted that she was not leaving her home. She was poor so the state paid for someone to go to her home 30 hrs. a wk and between the helper and us we kept her in her home til she really could not walk anymore. She didn’t last long after that.

Take her swimming, or just to a swimming pool, often and she’ll recover faster!
Thank you everyone for your prayers. My Grandma had her surgery. The doctor said it wouldn’t require a full hip replacement, but he thought that they could just put pins in it. The surgery went well. She wanted to do her recovery in the hospital therapy program, but her insurance would not cover it. My grandma was moved today to a rehab faciility. This is better than the nursing home with a physical therapy unit she was in last time. This new place is dedicated mostly to rehabbing people. It’s a nice facility, and they think recovery could take 4-6 weeks. Hopefully she can make a full recory and go back home. It would be horrible for her if she had to be in assisted living or a nursing home. She would absolutely hate that.

Great news! Having a hip pinned is not near as invasive as a full hip replacement. Make sure she gets her calcium and vitamin D, and probiotics to counter the effects of those dang pain pills. Activa is a good choice.

That is great news! This is exactly the surgery and recovery path that my mom is following with great results so far. She broke her hip Jan 6 and yesterday was triumphantly happy to announce that she had made it to the loo on her walker all by herself!

Good news about the surgery.
It would be horrible if she went into assisted living or a nursing home.
My 88-year old grandmother passed away a few days ago and she broke her hip in July 2012, when she was 87. Like your grandmother, she didn't need a full hip replacement, but a pin.
She made it through the surgery, got physical therapy and healed, but she remained confined to a wheel-chair and into a nursing home. Basically, they felt that any further physical therapy would be a waste of time on her. She refused to walk, because she was afraid, due to her limited cognitive ability.
All that inactivity due to being an a wheel-chair made her congestive heart failure worse until she died of that disease 1 1/2 years post hip surgery.
So, yes, it's very important that your grandma walking again with the assistance of a walker or a cane.
Otherwise, it's all downhill from there, which is what I aw on my step-grandmother.

I’m glad to hear that your mom is doing so well. I hope my grandma follows that path. The had my grandma up a bit for the first time yesterday, and it will take some time. In addition to the hip, she hasn’t walked for a week, so in older people, the muscles start to atrophy quickly. I hope your mom makes a full recovery. She’s in my prayers.
I’m sorry to hear about the loss of a your grandmother. It sounds like she had a rough time at the end. My grandma thankfully is not afraid to walk. She’s still sharp as a tack and wants to be out of that recovery center and back home in no time. They had her up a bit yesterday, and she will contine therapy 6 days a week for 4-6 weeks.
