Why has California chosen water shortages over desalination?

Israel has made the choice to turn its water shortages into surpluses by building lots of desalination plants. Desalination costs less than 40 cents per cubic meter, which is less than 1/6 penny per gallon. It’s so cheap that in addition to using desalinized water for residential uses, Israel also uses it for agriculture.

Meanwhile, California has chosen to have water shortages instead of building enough desalination plants.

Why did California make this choice?

“Meanwhile, California has chosen to have water shortages instead of building enough desalination plants. Why did California make this choice?”

It’s really just a matter of priorities. Bullet trains to no where that aren’t even really bullet trains are far more important than a life of daily ease. It’s also much easier to control a population with rationing and deprivations as these provide an arbitrary rational for whatever cause with which the fascists wish to blame: global warming, capitalism, evil conservatives, evil Republicans, over-population, not enough tax money, etc. The deliberately ill-educated population of serfs and peasants do not know enough that there are easy alternatives to such shortages and deprivations, and readily join the pogrom of the fascists.

I’m curious—do you get usable, marketable sea salt as a byproduct?

Don’t see the salt answer, but here’s an interesting report

What happens to the salt?

The desalination plant typically uses three kilograms of seawater to produce 1 kilogram of fresh water. The extracted salt dissolves in the excess sea water used in the process to form so-called brine. The brine is returned to the sea where it is diluted again in its natural medium.
Can salt be recovered?

The usual desalination processes do not provide for such recovery. Whereas they concentrate seawater 1.5 times, recovery of salt would require seawater to be concentrated ten times. Under such conditions the first crystals would appear in the brine. This would require a lot of energy and cannot be justified on an economic standpoint. Today whenever a large surface area is available close to a sunny seashore, salt pans, which make use of solar energy, are still the best method of salt production.

Here’s one for you , blanket California hater: Why is it that
the whole of the US remains energy dependent when it is
clear that the nation could take care of its’ own energy needs for
the next couple of hundred years? Or, is that also the fault of
every living, breathing soul in “Kalifornika”?

I am form the drug infested Colorado. There used to be much energy production here. There is enough carbon based energy here for several hundred years also. Socialism is creeping into Colorado form both coasts and drugs from the south giving us a triple whammy. The tentacles form hollyweard are trying to strangle us conservatives. Do you understand my frustration?

I suspect that California Democratic lawmakers got preoccupied with trying to win votes from illegal immigrants in order to stay in power, forgetting that such immigrants need water like everybody else, and consequently overlooked things like desalination to insure adequate water supply.

Israel makes quite a few nice bucks marketing salts—cosmetic and table. And I figured it would be too much trouble.

I am a 4th generation Californian. Life was good until liberals
flooded in..........FROM OTHER PLACES! Liberalism is a disease
which knows no boundaries. By bringing in more business (population)
Texas Gov Ric Perry setting is up his state for a fall.

So, I ask you why must we turn this into a geographic war?
Shall we fight the “Civil War” again? Your enemy (and mine)
is liberalism, not California.

Why no desalination?

Because...rich liberals own the whole shoreline?

The limousine liberals can fly in water. This helps get more of those “common” people to leave their state.

Why has California chosen water shortages over desalination?

And why has California chosen water shortages over deportation of illegals.
