We’ve got a serious problem in that we are now raising a second post-Cold War generation who has no memory of Communism, and thus no ingrained notion of WHAT Communism is. Or why it is bad.

Polling indicates most of them are all too ready to give it a whirl.

If there was no greed or self-importance...... communism, or socialism, might actually work.

However, there has to be someone to make decisions. That person feels they are WORTH MORE. Therefore, total equality is impossible.

Also, there are those who will do nothing but live off of the work of others, such as is happening now.

We are meant to help each other to stand up and be counted, not to “help ourselves”.

The “great thinker” Karl Marx was a poor drifter his whole life. Great vanity is always accompanied by great envy, hence the leftism. Developing vanity is often a defensive response to a mental illness.

Don’t they always fall back on the “we’ll do it right this time” or “the right people weren’t implementing it” or “they didn’t actually implement real communism” arguments?

The words “true believer” and “useful idiot” come to mind.

I will never forget the funniest moment when a die hard black communist, extreme left-wing, “bloody revolutionist”, was told by a black tax attorney after getting a sizeable pay raise and he had to pay much more in taxes, and he asked, “What does this mean?”, and she replied, “Congratulation. You’re now a rich white guy.”

1. Only communist economies rely on state violence.

Wow! Complete and utter BS right out of the gate! I've never heard anybody claim that ridiculous straw-man. Good work! Just the caliber of commentary we've come to expect from Salon.

The kids even offered to trade a girl for the braces on her teeth.
ahemm...to clarify: trade WITH a girl. The russian kids didn't offer to trade us a girl although that would have made for an interesting negotiation.
I knew a woman whose parents suckered for Stalin’s postwar propaganda to “Come back to Armenia.” Her uncle declined (the two families were in business in Egypt at the time, having escaped the Turkish genocide), and came to the US. As capitalists in the USSR, her family's experience was predictable - midnight knock on the door, 15 minutes to get ready for a trip to Siberia. Ultimately her uncle was able (who knows how) to get the USSR to agree to allow the family to emigrate to the US. After they had disposed of all their belongings that they couldn’t take with them, the commies delayed their departure, then allowed the parents to leave but the young-adult children were held back longer. And a girl - here I did a take, and she doubled down, “I mean a beautiful girl” - played up to her brother and tried to get him to decide not to leave at all.

All the communists I have known spit and sputter when you ask them to name one (just ONE) communist system that has ever worked.
I was a captive audience at some socialist propaganda one day, and I found myself musing about a little vignette I had seen in the Reader’s Digest:
During WWII in Britain, a sergeant saw a man inspecting totaled airplanes in a junkyard, and asked him what he was doing. The man replied, "I’m finding out where these airplanes were hit.” The sergeant asked what he planned to do with the information, and the man replied, “Maybe we can put armor in the places that airplanes get hit the most.” The Sergeant replied, “Son, planes get hit everywhere, and you’re only looking at the planes that made it back. When you've found out where those planes got hit, you put your armor everywhere else."
The point, obviously, is that if no example remains of a certain thing (such as “true” communism), maybe it is because any attempt at it has disappeared without a trace. In the case of “true” communism, maybe it has been tried plenty of times - but whenever it has been tried, it automatically converted over into the “corrupted” form.

Exactly as FA Hayek predicted in The Road to Serfdom.

She meant that it COULD be done without killing millions of dissenters. We did not pursue the discussion as there was so little Reason and Common Sense in it.

Yeah, but how are they going to get smart people to adopt communism? Put another way, why would high-ability people buy into the idea of a redistributionist society?

IMHO, we are socialist now.

I'd say we're fascist now. People still own the companies' equity, but the government exerts minute control over what they can do with it for most. Then there are a group of government-preferred crony companies that can use the government as a club to cheat the market.

I think you're close but not exactly right. Even mere self-interest, as distinct from greed, is incompatible with collectivism. I'm not greedy if I want to receive the fruits of my own efforts, less a very modest percentage to fund essential state services.
