Obama Applauds CVS for Stopping Sales of Cigarettes and Tobacco Products
The Weekly Standard ^ | February 5, 2013 | Daniel Halper

President Obama, an ex-smoker, released this statement applauding CVs for stopping the sale of cigarettes and tobacco products:

"I applaud this morning’s news that CVS Caremark has decided to stop selling cigarettes and other tobacco products in its stores, and begin a national campaign to help millions of Americans quit smoking instead. As one of the largest retailers and pharmacies in America, CVS Caremark sets a powerful example, and today’s decision will help advance my Administration’s efforts to reduce tobacco-related deaths, cancer, and heart disease, as well as bring down health care costs – ultimately saving lives and protecting untold numbers of families from pain and heartbreak for years to come. I congratulate – and thank – the CEO of CVS Caremark, Larry Merlo, the board of directors, and all who helped make a choice that will have a profoundly positive impact on the health of our country."

Who know? The left is so stupid in so many ways, it’s hard to predict what they will do next.

Since cigarettes need to be locked up, and IDs checked before being sold, it may just be a cost savings.

Most of the price of cigarettes are taxes I am not sure how much profit an outlet makes on a pack of cigarettes but someone may have done the numbers and figures they could use that time and space for something else.

I am old enough to remember cigarette machines were every where.

Why aren’t we all dead yet?

I’m sure it’s a much lower percentage at CVS but cigs are 40% of convenience store gross sales and likely higher profit percentage.

Kiss of death, this Obama pronouncement. CVS will be out of business by the time Emperor Zero leaves the White Hut. If he ever does.

I had a privately owned drug store in my town. It never sold tobacco or beer products from the 1970 through the 1990’s. The owner/pharmacist stated that even if it brought in revenue, he wouldn’t take part because his store was to provide goods to make and keep people healthy. It was then bought out by a chain drug store. The first thing that changed was the addition of a wall of tobacco products and beer coolers. Shortly after, the entire pharmacy staff resigned.

I guess CVS is just repeating history of my local pharmacy from the 1970’s.

If they start passing such bills, they will just kill off the whole drugstore industry.

The reason these chains keep building ever-bigger stand alone stores is that reimbursements on pharmaceuticals keep dropping. Hence they need you to wander around and buy crap while you’re waiting. Otherwise the stores will not be profitable enough to stay open.

That much, wow. But I doubt it would be the same for a pharmacy. Maybe someone else knows.

CVS is a poorly run retail operation, IMO. I’m guessing (based simply on my own observations in various cities) that Walgreens creams them in the markets where they compete closely.

The only time I’ve been in a CVS that was busy is when it was the only store of that type around. And that’s the only reason I’ve been in them...when there was no alternative.

Tobacco is an absolutely necessary leader item for convenience stores (especially ones with gas pumps).

I can’t speak for now, but years ago when I was a vendor (not tobacco), the store buyers told me that cigs were not particularly profitable, but they had to have them to get traffic.

Tobacco products are dangerous, but marijuana has the presidential seal of approval. Wonder what the rate of lung cancer will be in CA and WA in the next 15 years, and how will the potheads explain it away?

Even a blind squirrel finds a nut now and then.

I applaud CVS’ move. I wish every retailer would do the same.

The only reason the tobacco industry still exists is because it is a propped up crony capitalist boondoggle, hiding behind the skirts of Big Government.
