Poorly educated and lied to, Blacks at UCLA call correcting their grammar and punctuation racist
The Coach Is Right ^ | February 10, 2014 | Kevin “Coach” Collins

It’s hard to figure out what to make of the people in this story. Should these people be laughed at or pitied?

Recently a group of 25 self-described “Students of Color” held a sit-in to support poor English writing skills. They whined about the “racism” of being offered constructive criticism of their lack of grammar, spelling and punctuation abilities.

As products of dysfunctional government schools, many if not all of them have little or no writing skill. Many of them don’t know they have no writing skills. They have been lied to and had their heads patted so often by paternalistic liberals they can no longer recognize the truth about their shortcomings.

We can expect little else from students who have never been dealt with honestly

[snip] Apparently the poorly educated students who registered for this course expected more lies and head pats rather than actual instruction. Claiming to be, “aggrieved minority students,” these spoiled brats proved they haven’t enough brains to realize the value of authentic education.

When we used to live in WDC one of my favorite stickers (on a pickup) was “We Be A Capital City”. LOL.

Im 65 and was privileged to have a British-type education in New Zealand..some of my teachers in high school were actually from England..

I started school at 5 and started right in with real subjects..

In primary school (elementary) we were expected to learn how to spell read and write our own compositions..

we learnt “mental arithmetic” which involved doing sums in our head and not on paper..the teacher would quiz us orally and we had to write down the answers and had no time to count on our fingers toes or work out anything on paper ...you either knew what 2X2 was or you didn’t and on to the next one..for us it was fun...isn’t school fun anymore...

isn’t challenge stimulating for children anymore ??? why not ???

Tests in English, history etc were only essay questions and we had to write the answer with no clue given ..we either knew the answer or we didn’t..an American college was easy for me after my formal schooling...

points were taken off for bad spelling and bad penmanship ...ALWAYS

For Geography we either had the bare outline of a country and had to fill in the mountains rivers cities or we had to draw our own from memory...how many FReepers can draw the Great Lakes from scratch and name them plus the St Lawrence Seaway without looking ??? I still can...

BTW any spelling mistake by one child was added to our weekly spelling test which often was 50+ words long..

I can remember we once had Mesopotamia for weeks because someone would get it wrong on the spelling test...in spite of the rest of us constantly tutoring our school mates ...LOL (Did I say we were only 9, 10 when we learnt about Mesopotamia ???)

There were always cheers when some gradually hated word FINALLY disappeared from the list..

But that’s back in the olde days when teachers actually TAUGHT...

and 99% of children actually learnt..

A lot of teachers can't correct spelling and grammar anymore. They never learned it! (It's too hard.)

When I was in school, it was not just the English teacher with the red pencil. Your spelling and grammar would be corrected in Math, Science, and History classes too.

Quota system that UC system uses. In effect these students should never be at UCLA or any other UC school. They would be better served to go to a community college and complete the course work that their over paid high school teachers were to have done over four years or a CSU school.
My daughter went to UC Santa Barbara and went to an excellent high school in San Diego. She still have to take a bridge English course at UCSB. These students have not been held accountable for their English skills. Glad someone is finally saying, you can't write, you don't know grammar, I am not going to pass you.

Lack of writing skills, improper grammar, inability to spell, begs the question on what basis were they able to get accepted at a college?

This is probably why liberals are quick to embrace "job lock" and the virtues of not working. It's because they know that the children who grew up in the failed school systems are unqualified to work, so now they have to eliminate the stigma of not working.

Our son majored in math, but the non-math classes he took at UCLA had people who needed remedial work. This in upper-level courses. He took solace in math where most of the instructors were no-nonsense and full speed ahead.

Probably on ‘scholarship’ too. That’s an abuse of the word scholar for getting what should be called financial aid.

We don’t have affirmative action in military and sports. That is why we are the best.

I don't know about sports but it is rampant in the military and has been for several decades. In the late 70's I was up close and personal with it because I almost lost a promotion to an Instructor position because they flat out told me they needed to have a black to show they were not racist yet I was literally the best in my career field.

The only reason I got the position was the black guy ended up haveing a "Check Ride" (evaluation) just prior to the position selection and he made two Major errors. There was no way he could be awarded an Instructors job with even one Major so I was promoted.

About four months later they gave him an extra Check Ride using a freshly made easy script and he got the next Instructor job that opened.

I am semi-retired, teaching as a substitute in the public school system. I have a long-term job in special education as a substitute aide. The teacher, 34 years experience in special ed, was speaking to the class, four black, six white students. I was one on one with a severly disabled student while she spoke.

I did not react to her ebonics laced presentation other than to glance up from time to time as she murdered, grammar, tense, and usage, she stopped and looked at me and said “this is how I talk to my peoples, so dat dey unnerstan what I be telling them”.

I said nothing and continued on with my student.

I need the extra income so I will be unlikely to ask why, after 34 years as a professional educator, she would elect to perpetuate ebonics, accepting the degradation of the English language and accepting the barrier of functional illiteracy she is maintaining. For crippling students to aspire to anything more than “Do you want to supersize dat?”

"As Barack Obama told his community in South Chicago:

If you didn’t get an education [...]"

You don't get get and education; you earn an education.

But I am sure that Mr. B. Obambi is well aware of the distinction; he just neglected to note it. /sarc
