I thought for a photograph to be considered a “selfie,” the person depicted had to be “holding” the camera as well. No?

When I saw that the topic was the first “selfie” I immediately thought of M.C. Escher. Since Escher was born in 1898 I guess he didn’t predate this photo. But he did demonstrate that a “selfie” doesn’t require a camera!

I was going to attempt to paste his picture into this post, but I decided that the article in which it is embedded is a really good read. The picture to which I allude is a little bit down the page. It will be obvious.

http://levgrossman.com/2010/07/douglas-hofstadter-me-an-effing-great-book/

I read GEB when it was originally published. I had just completed my Masters degree in Computer Science and, unlike Lev, I could understand the technical jargon. One of the nerds I worked with read it twice. I think it helped inspire him to go back to school, get his PhD, and become a professor at the University of Illinois.

I also had the immediate reaction that this a fellow looks like he could easily be from *today.*

Now I’m trying to wrap my head around the idea that fashion trends repeat, But really, that hairstyle could be a Seattle based GrungeGuitarist.

And there’s just *something* about his features that looks “modern.”

Amazing.1839! My family (mom’s side) actually had a photography business in the 1850’s-60’s. My great great grand dad was a sea captain. My cousin is the ‘caretaker/curator’ of many fine originals of the ‘Captain’ taken around the world, along with other family members. They are my most prized memories.

Imagine, though...

Here’s this gentleman, obviously of some means (photographic equipment could NOT have been cheap back in that day) snapping an image of himself that lasted long beyond his days.

I see old photos, and I can’t help but wonder at what that person had seen in HIS / HER day; that time frame saw the country expanding, saw the first railroads beginning, early steam power, etc., the Mountain Man era, and the country STILL had a frontier.

And here he is, a product of his time, of his day, fooling with a camera, also new technology for it’s time.

A Fellow American, linking us here in this time, with him in his.

Gives one a sense of our ancestors. They weren’t all that different from us... except maybe THEY had a better understanding of BEING American than a majority of folks today.

I’d like to have been around back then to see it unfolding...

I think you’re likely right about them having a better understanding of BEING American than most today have. This young man’s image bears not the slightest indication of him being afflicted with political correctness—the bane of our time.
