A group of Democrats are urging Walmart to follow CVS Caremark and discontinue selling tobacco products.
The seven Democrats said Walmart, the nations biggest retailer, is also the nations biggest seller of cigarettes.
We recognize the legality of selling and profiting from tobacco products; however, Walmarts position as the nations largest retailer of any kind puts your company in a unique position to contribute to the health and well-being of all Americans< the Democrats said in a letter to the company. The letters signatories included Sen. Dick Durbin (Ill.), the number two Democrat in the Senate.
The letter stats that three quarters of adult smokers want to quit, and quotes former Walmart CEO Lee Scott as saying a tremendous number of Walmart shoppers smoke.
The letter was also signed by Sens. Tom Harkin (Iowa), Barbara Boxer (Calif.), John Rockefeller (W.Va.), Sheldon Whitehouse (R.I.), Sherrod Brown (Ohio) and Richard Blumenthal (Conn.).
Communist Democrats Nanny State PING!
Seriously, do they not understand just how much in taxes they collect in cigarette sales and, if they did eliminate smoking, just how much taxes would rise on everything else to make up for the loss in cigarette sales?
Tax wacky tybaccy.
Just get your buddy, obumbler, to issue an executive order.
Show us our future.
Thanks for the ping!
I’ll buy mine on the reservation. Take that Dems.
then they also need to stop selling chocolate. and gum. and sugary drinks.
but keep selling abortion pills, and anal lube. that all makes sense.
I thought libs were all about choice.
Instead of legislating like they’re supposed to they prefer to stick their noses into everyone else’s private business.
Wow. What a list of political losers.
Wait, I thought Democrats believe “my body, my right to choose” so that is not the case? I cannot understand how a person can believe it is fine to choose to murder a baby but oh no you can’t choose to smoke cigarettes...
If a person is given to... ahem... taking much credit, and if that person successfully quit smoking, would not that person let everyone know, over-and-over?
And, back to the original topic. I am a nonsmoker, and a scientist in a health-related field. There are few people more opposed to smoking than I.
That said, I am also opposed to taking away a relatively inexpensive source of tobacco products away from the big box stores. Why? Because that will take food out of the mouths of poor kids.
The poorer among us are more likely to smoke than are the wealthier among us. Tobacco addicts will get their tobacco, even at higher cost. Children of poorer families will be distributed less of the household income if more goes to tobacco.
Just my opinion, I welcome opposing views.
I can’t wait until these smoke Nazis tell the Indians to shutter their smoke shops. LOL! Pass the popcorn. This is going to get good.
Ban tobacco and bring in the pot, eh?
As a long time smoker who gave it up 13 years ago, I have to admit every time I see someone puffing on the evil weed I get jealous.
everyone who has has ever stood in a walmart trying to buy a pack of smokes understands that exercise in futility when the smart people spend $30 in gas to save $20 at the local Indian Rez and then then prove it by doubling down losing $40 on slots
