Seriously, do they not understand just how much in taxes they collect in cigarette sales and, if they did eliminate smoking, just how much taxes would rise on everything else to make up for the loss in cigarette sales?

If a person is given to... ahem... taking much credit, and if that person successfully quit smoking, would not that person let everyone know, over-and-over?
And, back to the original topic. I am a nonsmoker, and a scientist in a health-related field. There are few people more opposed to smoking than I.
That said, I am also opposed to taking away a relatively inexpensive source of tobacco products away from the big box stores. Why? Because that will take food out of the mouths of poor kids.
The poorer among us are more likely to smoke than are the wealthier among us. Tobacco addicts will get their tobacco, even at higher cost. Children of poorer families will be distributed less of the household income if more goes to tobacco.
Just my opinion, I welcome opposing views.

As a long time smoker who gave it up 13 years ago, I have to admit every time I see someone puffing on the evil weed I get jealous.
everyone who has has ever stood in a walmart trying to buy a pack of smokes understands that exercise in futility when the smart people spend $30 in gas to save $20 at the local Indian Rez and then then prove it by doubling down losing $40 on slots
