In my Humanities class I’m reading a book entitled “The Great Transformation” by Karen Armstrong. I wrote in my mid-term thesis that the Israelites did not attain their Axial Age until they let go of their dependance on their god, Yahweh. Before that, they got messed up bad. Over and over. The Biblical Lamentations times ten.
They depended on Yahweh to protect them from their numerous enemies, and it didn’t work. They kept getting conquered, enslaved and exiled. Once they let go of their religious rituals and moved to self-sufficiency, they attained intellectual enlightenment and thrived.
As the scholars who are reading this can tell, I’m pimping the web. My Thesis is due next Friday. Any (free) suggestions would be greatly appreciated. After all, I am an opportunist.
I would suggest you drop that book as a reference and use the KJV bible. It has proven itself historically accurate under a constant barrage of naysayers. You might find the Israelis were led into bondage, defeated in battles and otherwise punished by Yahovah BECAUSE of their disobedience to Him. The northern tribes are a good example.
