Americans wondering if assaults, breaking and entering and robberies are happening in their neighborhood do not have to wait for the local news sources to keep them up to date. Real time information is available at no cost to them with a map showing exact locations of where and what crimes have taken place.

When we were looking for places to live down here in the Charlotte, NC area, spotcrime.com was absolutely invaluable in figuring out neighborhoods to avoid (hint: most of them). Unfortunately most of the jurisdictions around here have since blocked Spotcrime from accessing their data and have instead gone to a single paid vendor, who charges for access to their crime data (and it’s delayed almost a week and inaccurate anyway).

The neighborhood in which I live has had this service available for some time. Apparently the local police and sheriffs department participate in it. After we saw how much crime was taking place in our subdivision we formed a Neighborhood Watch and since then we have not have any crime.
Almost is effective is to look up precinct voting data. Anything with less than 40% Democrat voters (including the place we live) tends to be fairly nice neighborhoods, regardless of income (ours is lower middle class) and demographics.
Some financial advisers suggest that if the minority population in an area is over 15% crime statistics should be checked before purchasing a home in that location.

Wanted to get the hell off that virus and diseased laden scum pit of a blog as fast as I could.

What gives you the idea that PublicEngines software is free?
Oh, if your city buys the software and makes it available, I guess it’s “free”. Kinda like Obamacare.
All I could figure out is that the site offers a free demo. Which indicates to me the real thing will cost you.........
It is free to the public not to the agencies that subscribe to it. The agencies are funded by our taxes.
The database that makes this all possible is NOT free, and that’s why they sue people who ‘scrape’ their public websites and reconstruct the crime information. It’s public info in the first place, they just have some IP to format it and make it available. But unless your law enforcement office participates and pays the fee, you’ll see nothing in your neighborhood.
