If we lose the virile, manly qualities, and sink into a nation of mere hucksters, putting gain over national honor, and subordinating everything to mere ease of life, then we shall indeed reach a condition worse than that of the ancient civilizations in the years of their decay.

-Theodore Roosevelt, "The Law of Civilization and Decay", The Forum (January 1897), reprinted in American Ideals (1926), vol. 13 of The Works of Theodore Roosevelt, national ed., chapter 15, pp. 259–60. (From Wikipedia)

A government designed to secure unalienable rights has devolved into one of plunder as a right.

Republican Teddy Roosevelt was the John McCain of his day. After his first term, he ran as a third-party progressive candidate (The Bull Moose Party) which resulted in splitting the Republican ticket and handing the White House to Democrat Woodrow Wilson -- America's first anti-constitutionalist, progressive left, academic president.

Screw Teddy Roosevelt.

-— Republican Teddy Roosevelt was the John McCain of his day -—

In my youth, I blamed FDR for everything, but Progressivism really started in earnest at the turn of the century.

Next to “The Man in the Arena” this is my favorite TR quote, if only it were still true.

“Yet the more I see the better satisfied I am that I am an American; free born and free bred, where I acknowledge no man as my superior except for his own worth, or as my inferior, except for his own demerit.”
-T. Roosevelt
