They crop up in the university auctions once in a while. How would they do for purifying drinking water? The manufacturer has info about how well it filters out bacteria, but I’d like to know how it does against metals and other chemicals.

Learn how to make a distiller for water. When raw water is heated and it vaporizes, it kills the bacteria and shed all impurities/chemicals/metals/salt to form distilled water. You can drink distill water but you will need to take vitamins to replace the minerals in your body. Distill water over time will deplete the minerals in your body and make you sick.

Exactly right; he’s just looking for another reason to ding us on something. The ammo mfgrs won’t suffer; every bit of any backlog will disappear quickly once any import ban is over. Many here will be on a panic buying spree, again, and gobble-up everything in sight.
Basic cheap water filter unfortunately this has a little liberal gibberish at the beginning but the design is good. However they don't tell you that you can get gravel and sand in just about any creek bed and that it should be well rinsed Even the store bought stuff comes from creek beds and usually is not cleaned) before use to remove sediments.
Make your own activated charcoal The Redneck Way a little weirdness at the beginning but the method is solid.
This will yield water with almost all the particulates removed and over 90% clear of bacteria. As a final step you might want to finish by giving your water a boil or adding a little Homemaed bleach to it.
Sand and gravel should be well rinsed every so often and new charcoal added just like the city filtration plants do.
Distillers are fun, but I just like having multiple options :)
