That's nice. I am a desktop/workstation type. I need horsepower, not portability.
Wife has a Win 8 laptop. I have diddled it enough so that I can use is in a rudimentary form, but it took far too much. Most idiotic interface ever. Would love to hear the logic (hah!) behind it. Yes, dumped the airhead smartphone look, but still.
Just ordered a Dell desktop Intel i7 XPS with Win 7. That should tide me over without too much culture shock, until MS gets their head out of the old orifice with the next OS. Figured I better grab a Win 7 box now while one the way I wanted was available. As others have pointed out, every other OS seems to be the good one.
Thanks for putting a bug in my ear about video editing, HD video at that.
Never really thought about it, but may get into it now I have more time on my hands. Looked into the Intel i3=i5=i7 differences and realized that the small price premium for the i7 was likely worth it. That and a "gamer" geforce video card made sense as well, so ordered a box with Win 7 like that.
About the only other thing I could have done was a solid state hard drive, more memory, blu-ray DVD burner, etc. But that is the nice thing about a full size desktop. Upgrading is easy and fun.

I suggest either Mint or Ubuntu. Both offer several styles of desktop and both also keep older versions online for those that have old or limited hardware. Mint may be fussier about some video cards, but I would try it first. Try Mint with the “Mate” desktop. That’s the beauty of Linux - you can download and demo different brands and versions without even installing on the computer - just boot and run them from your DVD drive. After you make a choice, that same CD/DVD will install to your computer hard drive; then you will see a tremendous improvement in speed. You really should have at least 500 MB RAM to run those distros decently, and 1 GB is even better.
