Elliot Rodger Shooting Prompts Feinstein to Blame NRA ‘Stranglehold’ on Guns
Roll Call ^ | May 25, 2014 | Steven Dennis

Feinstein questioned why Elliot Rodger was allowed to own guns, and ripped the NRA’s “stranglehold” on Congress. (Tom Williams/CQ Roll Call File Photo)

Elliot Rodger’s shooting spree had Sen. Dianne Feinstein lamenting the “stranglehold” the NRA has over gun laws.

“The deadly shooting in Isla Vista is heartbreaking,” the California Democrat said Sunday in a statement. “Schools should be places of safety, not where students fear for their lives.”

Feinstein questioned why Elliot Rodger was able to legally obtain and keep his guns.

“We must ask ourselves if an individual whose family called police with concerns about mental health, who is receiving therapy and who has had several run-ins with police should be allowed to own multiple firearms and hundreds of rounds of ammunition. When anyone, no matter their mental health or history, can so easily obtain any gun they want and as many as they want—we must recognize there is a problem.

“Unfortunately the NRA continues to have a stranglehold on Congress, preventing even commonsense measures like universal background checks that have overwhelming support. Americans need to rise up and say enough is enough. Until that happens, we will continue to see these devastating attacks. Shame on us for allowing this to continue.”

Separately, Rep. Tim Murphy, R-Pa., pushed for Congress to pass his mental health legislation in the wake of the Elliot Rodger’s rampage in Isla Vista.

An effort to pass background checks and a package of mental health initiatives was torpedoed by a GOP-led filibuster in the Senate last year.

The father is a total moron and will not accept the fact his F’ed up son is a frigen mas-murderer.
We will see this AH out there with hoodies F’ed up mom displaying their denial about they fact they had screwed up off spring. He better hope to hell he wasn’t involved in the purchase of the weapon although I hope he was.

Frankenstein doesn’t waste any time does she. How about the fact that the kid was a complete nut case, has about 10 billion photos of himself on Facebook, a complete over the top narcissist which to me is a clear sign that hmm....You know what, maybe somethings not quite right with this kid.

It’s ANOTHER case where they KNEW he had mental issues, and once again what was done about it? NOTHING! Once again it’s all the fault of the NRA even though he also killed with a knife and his car.

occasions about this young man. WHY did they NOT check to just see if this young man was TRYING to, or RECENTLY purchased firearms, in
CA. it takes FOREVER to actually take a firearm HOME!!!! WHY did they
NOT run a very simple check on this!!!

Shame on you Senator Feinstein on trying to manipulate a sad situation for political purposes. Isn’t it amazing the same people who want all of these stringent background checks on people purchasing guns are the same ones who decry implementing voter ID laws.

The real blame here lies with the cops (not excusing the perp, of course).

In this instance they actually met and talked with the perp due to some of the crazy crapola he had posted. They knew he was nuts and making threats. And then he posted the crazy video a whole day before the rampage. How's that? I viewed the video. It clearly constitutes the crime of criminal threats in California.

In general, these events are mostly caused by seriously deranged people, most of whom were known. The guy who shot the Congresswoman Gifford in AZ,for example, was worshipping a skull in his parents' backyard. C'mon.

There's no disagreement that a guy like this who is known to have made credible threats not only should not have had a gun but should have been under 72 hour (at least) observation after he posted his initial "manifesto" and plan online a year ago. Maybe even charges could have been filed at that time and he would at least have been on probation - maybe even ankle monitor, by now

Libtards are again making a straw man argument. They want to use this case to take away my gun. But nobody in their right mind would disagree that a guy who's obviously gone around the bend like the UCSB shooter should be stripped of his 2nd Amendment rights.

The cops really dropped the ball on this one. So much for "to serve and to protect." Those victims and their families and the public at large can't be feeling real protected right now. Indeed, he clearly should have been in the criminal justice system - maybe in mental health court or something - for over a year now.

I hope that at least somebody in the media will hold the cops' feet to the fire on this one and demand an explanation why the shooter wasn't picked up for the crime of criminal threats (I'm a CA criminal defense lawyer - as I said the stuff he posted the day before the shooting was clearly - I mean beyond the shadow of a doubt - constituted the crime of terrorist threats). In fact, given the detail and the background, the DA probably could have pressed a felony conviction and given him a year in jail to cool his heels. There's absolutely no excuse why this moron wasn't in custody awaiting arraignment first court day next Tuesday.

Perhaps the fact that the kids parents produced violent fantasy movies where people killed each other for not good reason may have had a bit more impact the NRA, which this kid may not have even known stood for National Rifle Association.

One of the really humorous and ironic things about the Democrat propaganda organ and low information, easily led Americans is that these lowfos HATE the NRA with a passion, but if you ask them what the acronym NRA stands for the majority have idea what NRA is an acronym for.

All they know is that they have been conditioned by politicians and their megaphones in the media to reflexively think , ‘NRA BAD, people who support NRA stupid and BAD” and that NRA is somehow linked to guns which are REALLY BAD, SUPER SCARY and REALLY DANGEROUS and which are only owned by people who are similarly bad, scary and dangerous.

They must have forgetten one; The law California Law that says if you have been hospitalized due to your mental problems, then you cannot legally get a gun. A 5150 law allows for a three day stay in the psych. ward to assess your level of danger to self and other. This would have made all the difference.

In Elliot’s case, neither parent, no teachers, neither of his two childhood friends called 911 for help. That’s what you do to take things to the next step when there is a clear and present danger, you ask for professional intervention. This boy was smart and manipulative enough to switch the symptoms off in front of those who could lock him up, as with the police.

Do you have any idea how many times the police do a Wellness Check on someone to see if they are suicidal or otherwise seriously distrubed AT THE TIME OF THE VISIT?

They did not have any cause to execute a search warrant and so what if they found out he had guns...we are now going to take guns of anyone who has emotional problems of some sort...and WHO will decide under what grounds?

Police checking on his guns? They don’t even do that in Chicago or Detroit and look at the gun homocides there.

His parents are totally responsible. They divorced when he was 7 and shuttled him back and forth between two houses, until Dad’s new sweetie decided she didn’t want him around and Dad went along with it.

And abandoned him to be raised by a single woman and “World of Warcraft.”

Oh, you say they wrote checks to a shrink? Yeah, they did everything they could for him. Parents of the Year.

I just read that in an article someone sent me, they said he was being treated by “multiple therapists” that he had Aspergers (just like the Sandy hook shooter) and that he threatened to harm himself and other people before and that his parents even reported him to the cops and the cops did nothing. Just lovely. And there he was roaming around with knives, guns and a car. But of course that’s the fault of the NRA. Let’s kill the 2nd amendment so lunatics can kill using only knives and cars.

His parents bankrolled the guns and the car. If his parents had insisted he pay his own way through life he would have been riding a bicycle and using plastic knives pilfered from McDonalds. Guns would have been outside his budget.

He talks about the dye job in his 141 pp. screed. He was obsessed with being blond, as he thought all the blond kids in his school were better looking. He nagged his mom until she gave up and took him to a salon.

Totally his idea. Of course she could have said no...

Ghouls like the old hag Feinstein rub their hands with glee when something like this happens.

She doesn’t bother to mention that the little psycho purchased his guns legally under both California and U.S. law, so her useless “universal background checks” would not have stopped him from purchasing these weapons.

She also doesn’t mention that half the victims were killed with knives, and the fact that the little psycho tried to kill additional people by running them over with the BMW that his liberal daddy bought for him.

We have freedoms in this country. You can not jail pe0ple for what they post on youtube (unless you actually threaten the President). You can not commit someone unless they are an ACTIVE DANGER TO THEMSELVES OR OTHERS AT THE TIME OF THE POLICE VISIT. Police can not monitor every person in a city who is stupid, goofy, says threatening stuff or is off balance. You have no idea how many citizens that would be.

Of course, if YOU want to give the State that power to detain and hold anyone who might do something at some future date...change the law and oh, btw, you might feel “safer” in a totalitarian country where that is tolerated, all in the name of “public safety”.

I can’t believe how many people on this thread are screaming for the police—THE STAE, THE GOVT—to ‘do something!!!” so we can be safer. Hitler was very , very popular for making Germany “safer” and the Germans were very happy to see the sudden reduction in crime.

California already has all those laws and more. If a man bent on killing people wants a gun, he can get it in any state in the Union.

Feinstein wants to prevent normal law abiding citizens from getting guns. Btw, every weekend in Los Angeles there are 3 to 6 people gunned down under similar circumstances and it doesn't even make the local news. That's because reporting black on black or Hispanic on Hispanic crimes does not fit the narrative.

someone DID call for a wellness check and when the police came he was not actively suicidal or homocidal. End of story. I think you want to be careful too about refusing gun owner ship to anyone who has EVER been hospitalized for any type of emotional problem...the next step is taking certain medications..or seeing a counselor..THAT’S a lot of US citizens.
