Their son, Second Lieutenant Darryn Andrews, was also named in Nathan Bradley Betheas Daily Beast piece today as one of the men from his battalion killed in action during the search.
If the accusation is true, it wouldnt be the first time higher-ups tweaked the narrative about how an American soldier died to make it less problematic for the military.
At the time his family say they were told that his men were hunting a Taliban commander and that the truck at the front of their group ended in a hole after being hit by an Improvised Explosive Device.
As the men got out to try and move the truck, a Taliban fighter with a rocket propelled grenade emerged and fired at them.
Lt Andrews was the only one to see it and tackled three of his men to prevent them being hit. He took a direct hit and died
Speaking to MailOnline from his home in Cameron, Texas, Mr Andrews said: When my son was killed there was no mention of searching for this guy (Bergdahl) but once all this has come out we got several emails and calls from soldiers who were with him in Afghanistan.
They say their mission was to search for Bergdahl. He (Lt Andrews) was killed in the search. We have no documentation of that.
According to Bethea, Andrews and his squad were on patrol to a village near the area where Bergdahl went missing when they were attacked. Mr. and Mrs. Andrews claim that the same troops who told them the truth about why their son was really on that mission also told them that they were forced to sign a letter that they wouldnt discuss the circumstances of the incident. That detail is also corroborated by Jake Tappers CNN report this morning, claiming that several troops who served with Bergdahl were asked to sign nondisclosure agreements. (Highly unusual, per one of Stephen Hayess sources in the defense establishment.) But if you dont buy any of that, read the firsthand accounts which I linked here from troops who claim to have served with Bergdahl who are also skeptical of why he went missing. I didnt realize this, but apparently the Pentagon conducted its own investigation in 2010 into why Bergdahl disappeared and concluded that, indeed, he walked away from his post. Quote: [A]fter an initial flurry of searching the military decided not to exert extraordinary efforts to rescue him, according to a former senior defense official who was involved in the matter. Ive been asking people on Twitter this afternoon whether its S.O.P. to risk soldiers lives to conduct searches in a dangerous area to find a suspected deserter. Answer: Yes, just because you cant be absolutely sure that he wasnt taken against his will. The fact that the military quickly scaled back extraordinary efforts to rescue him, though, speaks volumes. Clearly, they werent willing to pay a price steeper than what theyd already paid to find a guy whose disappearance they suspected wasnt accidental.
Via the Corner, heres Jay Carney once again ducking a question about whether Bergdahl deserted. The White House cant have been taken by surprise by the circumstances of Bergdahls capture, right? They had that Pentagon report from 2010 to consult; Michael Hastings wrote a widely read story for Rolling Stone two years ago raising the possibility of desertion as well. They went into this prisoner swap with their eyes open, and yet Carney seems to have no spin prepared to deal with the inevitable questions. I guess they counted on the men from Bergdahls squad staying silent as we handed over five Taliban savages to get him back. Big mistake.
As proud as I am of my own service, and of that of dozens of my family members, I would not encourage my son or daughter join the US military, at least under this CinC and the likely next one.
How are they going to live down THIS scandal?
Can the media save their bacon yet again? This was no hero, Bergdahl was a deserter. The man who died saving three others - now that is a hero.
Give Bergdahl back.
Somehow it is doubtful that Obama will be posing with the families of the soldiers who died trying to find this disturbed deserter or the families of the brave men who died in the operations that resulted in the capture of those five Taliban thugs Could anyone imagine Roosevelt or Churchill making a similar deal with Hitler? This exchange, five senior Taliban commanders for a deranged deserter has to be devastating for the morale of soldiers who are deployed to fight the Taliban.
You can’t impeach him and there’ll be no coup de etat or citizen uprising, so what does he care?
i am sick of this country lying to us about everything. and I mean anything and everything. without fear of any kind of retaliation or justice or punishment.
this is not how it’s supposed to be.
More blood on Obama’s hands.
She will be on with Hannity on radio show tomorrow per Sean.
Stop it now. You’re gonna make Boehner and McConnell cry.
God help us all.
Dude, that was like 2 years ago!
I want them to cry all the way to their front porch at retirement ranch.
Six good men died to rescue a person who very well may be a deserter and collaborator.
Hmmm. It looks like the government has a pattern of lying when it’s about Americans vs bearded jihadis.
No...the US government has a pattern of lieing about just about everything and anything. If the government told me it was sunny outside, I’d have to look first before believing them.
There is NO TRUTH in anything said to us from Washington. We cannot believe anything! They lie and have no remorse....just lie and lie, and lie...all of them!!
Now why can’t we trade thousands of Mexican citizens for one Marine held in a Mexican jail?
Because the Mexicans don’t want to go back?
