From about 1885 until 1915, pacers and trotters were racing royalty in America, the popularity of these standardbred horses greater than that of any baseball star or other spectator sport. When the immortal pacer Dan Patch fell ill in 1904, news of his malady traveled across the nation as racing fans and the public at large anxiously sought out the slightest scrap of information about his condition. Of course, at a time when Ty Cobb, the countrys highest paid baseball player made $12,000 per year, Dan Patch was earning $1 million! And stories of Dans successes on the track were regularly printed above those of Cobb on the nations sports pages.
Then in 1917, the mare Mahuba had a foal; a large, beautifully conformed, chestnut-colored colt which owner August Belmonts wife Eleanor Robson Belmont would name Man o War. Two years later, racing on the turf had made an astonishing comeback. With even authorities in New York no longer working to drive thoroughbred racing with its crooked bookies and...

Where? I don't see them.
What stopped you from posting them?
You have to open the article to read the list.
What’s the story on the first colt with 2;17 TIME? Its that an error? Must be since later it gives the time of 2:28 as setting a Belmont record. That was before Secretariat, of course.
Yeah, that's the scam.
Homeboy is pimping for hits.
There's no other reason for him to excerpt this blog.
The hits pay for his hookers and crack.
11 great horses. And the 1973 winner was the best of the 11.
The blog says that that earlier race from 1917 was 1 3/8 miles before they changed the distance to 1 1/2 miles.
The Triple Crown is a farce! Horses aren’t bred the same today as they were back then.
The Belmont has had varying distances. Some were as high as 1 5/8 miles. That race was 1 3/8 miles.
The standard became 1 1/2 miles in 1925.
Can you explain what the difference is?
General fragility of body and leg bones, in particular.
That’s why so many shatter their cannons and get put down.
Native Dancer gets the hereditary blame.
Year Gap 1919 1930 11 1935 5 1937 2 1941 4 1943 2 1946 3 1948 2 1973 25 1977 4 1978 1
The standard deviation is 7.3 years so to wait 37 years is about a 1 in 10,000 event. Seems like we should be asking if there has been a fundamental change in the system.
However, look at the "track" record through 1948. Standard deviation is only 4.1. A winner every 3-4 years.
But then there's a 25 year gap until 1973. Wow. This equates to a 1 in a million gap given the track record up until 1948.
So the owner was correct.
He (we) may not live to see another TC. However, with the experience in gaps to date, this is normal. Not due to changes in the sport.
Horsey style isn’t as popular anymore?
Did you mean Northern Dancer? You mean we can blame Canada once again?
No, it’s Native, not Northern.

Ruffian is why I have not watched a horse race since she went down.
Their legs are too light and they’re too “greyhound-y” compared to Man O’ War and the older, heavier horses.
My mistake... Native Dancer was the damsire of Northern Dancer.
Eight Belles gave her all and her reward was exploded legs and a needleful of death.
Horses are intelligent, sentient animals.
What must she have been thinking?
I hate horse racing.
The modern thoughbred is an accident waiting to happen. All muscle and about half the bone needed to get all that energy to the ground. The only horses that Beckie and I will own are foundation bred quarterhorses or mustangs. The muscle and bone are in balance with these animals, and their minds and temperment are vastly superior.
The interesting thing about that list is that only one horse, Seattle Slew, amounted to much at stud.
