Prior to his Army service, Sgt. Bowe Bergdahl was administratively discharged from the Coast Guard after only 26 days in 2006.
U.S. Coast Guard and Army officials confirmed to CBS News that the sergeant who was recently exchanged for five Taliban detainees had joined the Coast Guard before the Army, but was dismissed for unclear reasons just 26 days later.
Lt. Col. Elaine Conway told CBS News that the Army knew of Bergdahls discharge from the Coast Guard, and said they are looking into whether it was known at the time of his enlistment into the Army.
An uncharacterized discharge means that Bergdahl didnt serve long enough to have his performance characterized or judged.
According to The Washington Post, which obtained several pieces of Bergdahls writings at the time, show a man struggling with mental health issues.
Trying to keep myself togeather [sic], he wrote, according to The Post. Im worried. The closer I get to ship day, the calmer the voices are. Im reverting. Im getting colder. My feelings are being flushed with the frozen logic and the training, all the unfeeling cold judgment of the darkness, he wrote in an entry right before he deployed....

Is the Army so desperate that they let nut jobs like Bergdahl in after they’ve washed out of another branch of service? That is extremely disturbing to those of us who have loved ones in the Army.
” Im worried. The closer I get to ship day, the calmer the voices are. Im reverting. Im getting colder. My feelings are being flushed with the frozen logic and the training, all the unfeeling cold judgment of the darkness,
Oh dear. Bet he would be a load of fun after 18 hours rolling around in a Humvee.
Bergdahl Was Discharged from the Coast Guard for Psychological Reasons Before He Joined the Army
Great. A brain-damaged freak in addition to being a deserter and a traitor. ...and the fools promoted him to Sgt.
That is what looks like happened. Used to be that if you washed out of boot camp, none of the other branches would touch you.
he also try to join the French Foreign Legion and was told where to go
Don’t forget: He was on track to make Staff Sergeant, E-6 this month.
How can someone who got bounced from Coast Guard in less than a month get into the Army?
Either he fell through the cracks or they were desperate for bodies, or both. I once drove a guy to the MEPS to get sworn-in who’d finally passed the ASVAB with the minimal score after repeated tries.
Officers whom did not get his college degree finished in time got those. Bumped from 0-2 down to E-6.
Maybe they mismeasured him and he was only 5’11 1/2” tall?
Or O-4 to E-7. I’ve seen it. One O-3 stupidly mentioned 3 codewords out in the open. Next day I outranked him.
Bergdahl writes like a reporter for The New York Times.
I'm going to see if I can find it coming from a book or something.
26 Days.Sounds like he flunked out of boot camp
What a frigen looser
I agree, at 26 days he was still at Cape May, NJ.
Ask his fellow Soldiers about his overall behavior. They were there.
Never in 26 years of Army service have I seen an officer demoted to an enlisted rank= a commission to and enlistment? Hmm. Some one ad better quote some regs to this former enlisted SSG retired FG officer.
Officers are offered discharge in lieu of CM if minor, never “demoted” to a lessor rank/grade and certainly not to an involuntary enlisted contract....
Either CM or go home (admin separation for cause)...
I am from MO, show me!
And .. since Bergdahl still has not spoken to his parents .. what do people think might happen if he’s turned loose and he returns home ..??
I’m really concerned he’ll turn on his parents.
I don’t know the reg. ‘cause I’m M.I. not admin., but I saw it with my own two eyes three times. Two, I heard, were some kind of RIFs, the other, as I described, was for a major security breach.
What’ll we know bout this guy and his dad a month from now?
It looks like they’re going to keep him under wraps for a while. Since he’s not talking to the parents, I’m thinking maybe he didn’t want to be freed.
So why is this coming out??? What story are they trying to spin???
It’s the Army’s fault, not poor little Bowe Bergdahl’s.
I look at the shack they live in and think of the Unabomber.
Oh and a free trip to the Washington zoo.
You are most likely correct.... more’s the shame
Liberal, ballet gay AND crazy ?!
They live in a shack?
It’s a Getty Image so I don’t want to even post the link. But if you google Berghdahl Homestead, you should be able to find it.
Either he fell through the cracks or they were desperate for bodies, or both.
Another possibility: Someone wanted in theater a nutcase that they could use as a liaison with Obama’s terrorist buddies.
Im really concerned hell turn on his parents.
Be a real shame....
Im thinking maybe he didnt want to be freed.
That’s what I thought when I saw him wiping away tears in the release video.
Army recruiters can be quite creative in getting anomolies like this brushed aside.
“It looks like theyre going to keep him under wraps for a while”
The imposter probably got burned on this deal like all the rest. Bad guys sold him a dud or nothing at all.
This is ranking up there with the bin laden story in terms of validity.
If they break their contract, they are done for. Involuntary demotion to E-6. We lost one 0-2 due to him ignoring the Army upon him finishing his degree. My PL seemed too smart, so I asked him why he was such a young E-7? His contract stipulated him being a MAJ “IF” he finished his JD and passed the bar. He didn’t. Now he’s an E-8 ready to retire. Contracts mean things.
I was poofed to Specialist 6 by a general officer, so it works both ways.
Idyllic: This is the beautiful homestead of Bob and Jani Bergdahl in Hailey, Idaho. The Bergdahls hope Bowe will return here to a hero’s welcome

That’s sort of what the Clintons had to live in after 2000/sarc
“Beautiful?” That’s a shack!
Correct. “Entry Level Separation.” Those serving under 180 days receive an Administrative Separation with “Uncharacterized Service.” At least that is what Marine Recruits got. Basically, the contract is “null and void” as to prevent any claim of disability later.
We had a lot of “Bi-polar; Borderline Personality Traits and, in the early days of DADT, ALOT of recruits “refusing to train” because of their alleged sexual proclivities.
Location! Location! Location!
Must be so for other than basic branches. WP and ROTC cadets- yeah, if they don’t commission after 4 yr of scholarship/subsidy, they can be enlisted.
