Lewis: The real issues regarding the Bergdahl situation
The Casper Star-Tribune ^ | June 14, 2014 | Nora Marie Lewis

Posted on 06/14/2014 1:52:17 PM PDT by 2ndDivisionVet

Editor:

As our dear voluntary soldier Bowe Bergdahl returns to us, let's rejoice with his family. If he chose to walk away in Afghanistan instead of committing suicide, we rejoice.

His message reaches us here at home: American soldiers are objecting to multiple deployments and multiple injuries. Those who commit suicide are sending an unheeded message.

America's problem at this moment is not judgment of a soldier who has served 5 years imprisonment by terrorists. Let us instead discern what must be done about detainees at Gitmo. Instead of trading them to terrorists, NATO must step up. The 27 other countries in NATO should assume oversight of Gitmo detainees in their countries. America has born the burden of housing and force-feeding fasting detainees long enough. Send them to the other 27 NATO countries and close Gitmo for good.

America's core issue is this: We do not torture. Sen. John McCain (himself a tortured prisoner) said, "torture is not an option; the prisoner will say anything for relief."

Now is the time for all good men to come to the aid of their country (man). Welcome home, dear voluntary soldier. Time to replace our voluntary army with an army requiring only one deployment.

NORA MARIE LEWIS, Basin

Liberal psychobabble.
No wonder Obama was re selected.

Sen. John McCain (himself a tortured prisoner) said, "torture is not an option; the prisoner will say anything for relief."

True. However, I don't think any American envisions ever using anything even vaguely resembling torture to get an enemy to "confess," the only thing McCain could be logically talking about.

It stress methods are used, it would be to get critical information, and many thousands of years of human experience show pretty clearly that "torture" can be quite effective at getting it.

There are excellent arguments that we should never under any circumstances use torture, but that it is ineffective is not one of them.

Why the anti-torture activists insist on conflating the morality and the effectiveness of torture is quite beyond me.

Rejoice, you say? I don’t think so. The boy is as nutty as a fruitcake and has been (sadly untreated) for a long time. He presented a danger to himself and his platoon. Now as far as changing from all volunteer to a short mandatory deployment, I say yes, lets study the situation. Unfortunately, they military is being made smaller these days, so they can be very chosey as to who gets in. Even then, you’ll get misfits.

Yes he was a volunteer.
Yes some units receive multiple deployment.
No deserting your comrades is never the answer to any problem.

Apparently she's a "Republican" from Wyoming:

Nora Marie Lewis, 73, of Basin, ran for the senate twice (against Malcolm Wallop in 1988 and against Al Simpson in 1990), spending only $300 per primary, making a statement against PAC money. She has been a member of the party for 53 years.

I have LOTS of problems with the draft, despite having been a selective service board member, but we may be forced to go back to it sooner rather than later.

There are Ripon Republicans all over, in every state. I knew several in Iowa, two of them office-holders (Secretary of State and a US Congressman) so not surprising.

Thanks, Nora.

No one at Guantanamo is being tortured, but nice of you to invent stuff you know nothing about.

Oh, and torture does work when the prisoner knows that it will continue if what he tells you doesn't check out.

Plus, waterboarding isn’t torture.

The real issue is that 0bama committed treason by letting the Tollybon Five go.

Article III.

Section. 3.

Treason against the United States, shall consist only in levying War against them, or in adhering to their Enemies, giving them Aid and Comfort. No Person shall be convicted of Treason unless on the Testimony of two Witnesses to the same overt Act, or on Confession in open Court.

The Congress shall have Power to declare the Punishment of Treason, but no Attainder of Treason shall work Corruption of Blood, or Forfeiture except during the Life of the Person attainted.

Nora Marie is apparently advocating the draft on one hand and desertion as a form of suicide prevention on the other. This should get interesting. Given that LBGTs have a much higher rate of suicide, we should expect high desertion rates amongst gays in our military.

wiki:
“ The Suicide Prevention Resource Center synthesized these studies and estimated that between 30 and 40% of LGBT youth, depending on age and sex groups, have attempted suicide.[19] A U.S. government study, titled Report of the Secretary’s Task Force on Youth Suicide, published in 1989, found that LGBT youth are four times more likely to attempt suicide than other young people.[20] “

If we have another muslim at 1600 when it happens, I’ll help with the fare if anyone wants to desert to Canada because I well understand not wanting to fight to further Islamic goals.

Let us instead discern what must be done about detainees at Gitmo.

Feed them to the sharks.
