Building my first AR-lower as I type this. UNBELIEVABLY easy!
Hey!! What kind did you get?
Spike’s Tactical lower with The Punisher logo on the side. Finished in less than an hour. No vice used, either, although I know I’ll have to get one for the upper.
Now it’s just a matter of next payday to get more goodies for it.
Good for you!! Once you start building them, you can’t stop!! It’s a lot of fun to try to build different configurations. The last one I did has a Black Hole polygonal barrel and it’s a very sweet shooter.

Here’s a trick I learned along the way:
Get a 4-40 tap and thread the hole for the rear take down pin. Insert the detent and spring, then capture them in the hole with a 4-40 x 1/8 set screw.
It’s a hell of a lot easier than trying to keep them in place while tightening the castle nut and back plate. And get some extra set screws for the next builds.
Oops, I meant rear take down pin detent.
All of that will have to wait for next payday. I’ll keep it in mind, though. Much appreciated.

It really WAS fun. I can’t believe some lucky folks out there actually get PAID to do these kind of things.
Now, I’ll have to figure out what next to get for it. Gonna stick with iron sights until I get the hang of it -I’m mainly a pistol guy.
How hard is it to build the upper, in your opinion?
The upper is easy too. Just be careful lining up the gas tube and tightening the barrel nut. You’ll need a barrel nut wrench and a torque wrench. Also a vise block for the upper is handy.
Make a list of the parts you want. Check it twice. I seldom do that and always forget something.
I built my own lower, but purchased a complete upper to go with it from PK Firearms. It worked out well for me and I don’t think I would have really saved much by building it myself.

I ended up buying some Magpul handguards to replace the standard ones, so did spend a little extra there.
I think the mid length gas system is the way to go for reliability. Daniel Defense makes a good barrel.
