The Atlantic: Doctors Most Qualified to Decide Who's Fit to Carry a Gun
Breitbart's Big Journalism ^ | June 30, 2014 | AWR Hawkins

Posted on 06/30/2014 10:03:37 PM PDT by 2ndDivisionVet

On June 30 The Atlantic ran a column focused on treating firearms as "a public health crisis" and allowing physicians "to determine who is fit to carry a gun."

According to The Atlantic, "all U.S. states allow citizens to carry certain concealed weapons in public for lawful purposes, with the exception of felons, persons proven to abuse controlled substances, individuals with a history of domestic violence, and those deemed mentally unstable or dangerous."

Citing the caveat regarding "those deemed mentally unstable or dangerous," The Atlantic explains that "some states may... require" a physician to sign off on a concealed carry permit application before one is issued. This points to an opportunity for physicians in all states on this matter, because "gun violence" is increasingly described as "a public health crisis."

After all, "the American Medical Association, the American College of Physicians, and U.S. Surgeon General nominee Vivek Murthy are calling gun violence a public health crisis," which provides a basis for viewing doctors "as a crucial link in the prevention chain."

A survey of physician attitudes on this subject printed in The New England Journal of Medicine shows that 59 percent of responding physicians do not believe they can "accurately assess whether [their] patient is physically capable of safely using a concealed weapon."(continued)

...the right of the people to keep an bear arms shall not be infringed...

(no registration, no licenses, no taxes, no testing, no mandated classes, no nothing! that’s not a perfect system but there IS no perfect system and it IS probably about as good an approach as ever devised. More to the point, it is the American constitutional approach... so should be followed by “our” government...)

I’m quite sure the US constitution has that covered already but I wouldn’t be surprised that someone named Iulia didn’t understand that.

Welcome to my world these last 31 years: I haven’t had a US born doctor at the VA since I started going there after leaving the service in 1983.

I work with medical doctors every day. Believe me when I say, there are plenty of US born doctors that would be quite happy to infringe on your right to keep and bear arms.

When they start talking about commentators and reporters needing to have a certificate of approval from a doctor and a psychologist prior to practicing their First Amendment right wake me up.

I know alot of doctors and some have insane personal lives so I don’t consider them to be the best at making such decisions.

Isn't it amazing that the Leftist can find all sorts of rights NOT in the Constitution, but has difficulty understanding the plain English language of the amendments IN the Constitution. Particularly the religious exercising parts of the first. the entire right to bear arms of the second and all of the ninth and tenth amendments.

Get used to it.

By 2022, after the next Census, the Democrats will take permanent control of the White House, the Senate, the House, and the Supreme Court.

And they will “Come and take them.”

Or try, anyway.

The Secret Service: ‘Justice, duty, courage and honesty.’
If someone was able to slap a sticker under Barry’s window, mebbe they should add ‘vigilance’?
Can these guys be trusted with guns? They sound a little irresponsible ...

it is amazing, and quite frustrating... that you can spend years studying the constitution and American history and political theory...
only to see that so many people treat all of the above (and thus, our raison d’etre as well as our most basic liberties)
as trash

They can't take them if they cannot find them. I would not deny owning guns either.
The real war will start when door to door happens without warrants. Many will die and
a turning point in confiscation will take place. Brown shirts have families too.

Hahahaha! The only real explanation that works is that one of them did it. I used to guard Vice President Bush when he visited the base where I worked and you couldn’t get within 100 yards of his vehicle unless you worked there like me or were in the guard detail, and things were much looser back then than they are now. The Secret Service, for the most part, are very conservative.

When I worked in an office, my boss was a big Democrat, a real lefty, and had a stick up his butt about politics; in all other things a pretty good guy, if a little stiff. We fished together.
I stuck an NRA sticker on the back bumper of his Dodge Stratus, just enough so it could easily be peeled off. And I forgot about it.
A month later he found it and was livid! His buddies thought he’d gone ‘rogue’ I suppose. Heh. He’s dead now. Worried too much maybe.

That's actually terrifying, as it implies 41% of doctors are either ambivalent or supportive of gun-grabbing government Goosesteppers. Considering that we aren't even allowed to choose our doctor anymore, doctors will probably receive a lot of government moolah to promote Bolshevist gun-grabbing programs. Doctors who are more cautious on making mental health statements will be priced out in favor of those who support the Obamunist agenda.
